Rumor: Insiders leak details about Destiny Rising, an in-development mobile game by NetEase

What would a looter shooter like Destiny look like on mobile? This is a question that many gamers may yet ponder as insider leaks have called attention to the existence of a mobile game set in the Destiny universe.

The game is called Destiny Rising and is described by sources as a prequel to the first game in the series as opposed to a mobile port of Destiny 2. Gameplay is noted as a third-person shooter, with players controlling heroes from the universe and gameplay features like strikes, missions, and possibly raids, though how any of those longer-form activities translate to mobile isn’t immediately clear.

The game is being developed primarily by NetEase, with Bungie simply providing license for the Chinese megacorp to make the game and “very few” Bungie developers actually working on the project, with the studio basically “[letting] NetEase do whatever they wanted with the game” This agreement was reportedly years old, happening at some point before Sony’s acquisition of the studio.

That does mean one of the closest parallels to Destiny Rising is Diablo Immortal, with all of the potential microtransaction malfeasance that comparison suggests. However, the game may ultimately not matter to western audiences as Rising is being developed almost exclusively for the Asian market.

As for when it could release, that isn’t known either, and is particularly muddy considering there hasn’t even been a tease, though that’s presumably in order to not upset core Destiny fans. And that presumption may prove correct if reaction on the FPS’s subreddit is any indication.
