NetEase formally unveils its cute new solo/co-op game ANANTA (fka Project Mugen)

NetEase and studio Naked Rain have a big announcement this morning: The cute anime traversal-oriented game it’s been teasing under the codename Project Mugen finally has an official name and a trailer go with it. It’s now called ANANTA.

“Nova City has plunged into Chaos, from spooky paranormal phenomena to toilets racing through traffic in the streets, the game promises to offer a unique blend of humor, adventure, and mystery,” NetEase says. “Players will meet a variety of interesting characters, jump into exciting combat, solve challenges and safeguard the balance by overcoming threats to humanity, all while enjoying unparalleled freedom to traverse and discover Nova City on a journey to find out who you really are.”

We’re covering it here on MassivelyOP, so you probably can assume that it at least offers multiplayer, and yep, it does – but it is not an MMORPG. Like a lot of new games the past year or two, the game is primarily single-player, but it does offer four-player co-op, and the studio said last year that it “hopes that players can enjoy the game with their friends online.” (Good luck finding that info on the website or press release, however.) File it under merely multiplayer.

Other features being touted by the studio are an “immersive urban experience” through a “realistic cityscape teeming with opportunities and freedom,” dynamic gameplay “as thrilling as a kung fu movie,” and non-combat activities like “weekend explorations” and “making new friends.”

Do note this is a free-to-play game; preregistration is live on the official site. There’s no release window, but the company says, “It won’t be long before aspiring Agents can experience Nova City for themselves.”
