Welcome back to Massively Overpowered’s formal end-of-the-year awards!
Today’s award is for the Best MMO Rogue Server, which was awarded to Warhammer Online: Return of Reckoning last year. Readers will remember that this is still a fairly new award for us, being formalized back in 2021. We use the term “rogue server” to describe the haze of private servers floating around the genre; while we do not cover rogue servers or private servers for MMOs that still exist and are still being developed by their parent companies, we do cover player-run servers for dead MMOs and studio-approved player-run servers, and so this award is for that latter group, even if they are not officially “rogue.” Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end!
And the MassivelyOP staff pick for the Best MMO Rogue Server of 2024Â is…
STAR WARS GALAXIES: LEGENDS
Andy McAdams:Â City of Heroes Homecoming
Brianna Royce: City of Heroes, SWG Legends. We had some debate about whether City of Heroes Homecoming should count here as it’s not really a rogue server but a legitimate MMO with a legitimate license. But I’m happy to tip my hat to Star Wars Galaxies Legends this year. While the back half of the year was fairly quiet for the game, the front half was loaded with a huge overhaul of player cities that has changed the game’s landscape forever, not to mention the major space updates after that, plus a gigantic event as players came out in force to celebrate the game’s SOEclipse – the exact moment when the rogue server has been alive longer than the original MMORPG. They do good work.
Chris Neal:Â Star Wars Galaxies Legends, Warhammer Return of Reckoning. I’m not going to claim that it has my heart – I did try it and it just hasn’t really set its hooks in – but this year definitely saw SWGL improve and add on to a seminal classic. I can tip my hat to that even if I still feel like I’ve missed the memo.
Eliot Lefebvre:Â Warhammer Return of Reckoning
Justin Olivetti:Â Star Wars Legends seems like it was all over the place this past year, and so I give some honest props to those volunteers who never seem to be content with the status quo but keep pushing the game to new heights.
MJ Guthrie:Â SWG Legends. SWG Legends keeps those development wheels a-turning’, making the game even richer than when it was live. How can that not be award-worthy?
Sam Kash:Â Star Wars Galaxies Legends, specifically because of the player city update.
SWG Legends took our award for Best MMO Rogue Server. What’s your pick?
