MassivelyOP’s 2024 Awards: Best PvP MMO

Welcome back to Massively Overpowered’s formal end-of-the-year awards!

Today’s award is for the Best PvP MMO, which was awarded to Albion Online last year. We halted this older award after 2017 since the state of PvP MMOs was pretty weak, but we brought it it back a few years ago when we knew we could crown a legitimate winner. We’ve opted to include live, fully released MMORPGs launched in any year, as long as their 2024 PvP experience is what’s being judged. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end!

And the MassivelyOP staff pick for the Best PvP MMO of 2024 is…

THRONE & LIBERTY

Andy McAdams: EVE Online

Brianna Royce: Throne and Liberty, New World, Albion Online. Albion Online has won this award three years in a row, and it’s still fantastic, but I’m glad we get to acknowledge that there are other ways to do PvP. T&L may not be my cup of tea, but it’s loaded with endgame PvP and not shy about it.

Carlo Lacsina: Throne and Liberty. I had a lot of fun fighting in a guild war with my guildies. It was chaotic, but it just feels cool fighting in a chaotic fight while your shotcaller calmy tells you the next move. They also struck a balance with open world PvP. It’s not always on, it’s clearly communicated when it’s going to start, and it’s only in select areas. This ensures that players can just play how they want whenever they want.

Chris Neal: Throne and Liberty. The bare few times I actually did accidentally wander into PvP in this game, I was taken down in two to four presses of a button. So that’s not neat. But clearly this game is doing something right for those who zero in on the large-scale stuff this MMO has going on. Here’s hoping Amazon does something about the mega-alliances before they turn the sand into cement.

Eliot Lefebvre: Warhammer Return of Reckoning

Sam Kash: Pax Dei, Throne and Liberty

Tyler Edwards: I think EVE Online should get some acknowledgement for cultivating a brutal yet fascinating PvP galaxy, complete with two new expansions this year.

Throne & Liberty took our award for Best PvP MMO. What’s your pick?

How does MassivelyOP choose the winner?
Our team gathers together to nominate and discuss candidates and hopefully settle on a consensus winner. We don’t have a hard vote, but we do include commentary from writers so that you can see our thought process. The site’s award goes to the staff selection, but we’ll include both it and the community’s top nomination in our debrief in January. Reader poll options include all MMOs nominated plus a few others we thought should be included.
