Longtime readers of MOP will know that when we give out our MMO of the year award, we do not limit it to just brand-new titles. We haven’t done so in over a decade now, and the reason is simple: All too often, the new games can’t hold a candle to the old ones.
Of course, this year, a new MMO did win! But if it hadn’t, would it have been a different new MMO or an older one that took its place?
In other words, it worth isolating just the new MMOs and multiplayer MMO-adjacent titles and comparing them not to games with decades of content behind them but just to each other, which is exactly what we’re doing in today’s Leaderboard poll. So let’s honor tradition and sort out what was the best new-new MMO of 2024!
A few notes: We’re not including content updates, rogue servers, or games that have been broadly playable since before 2024. We are focused here on MMOs that launched or soft-launched (for example, into early access), here in the west, as new titles in 2024. And we’re including a few multiplayer titles that bleed over into the MMO category so that we have a good sample to pick from. Don’t think those should count? Don’t vote for them. Pick up to three!
