Medieval survival sandbox The Black Death explains ongoing delays, insists development hasn’t stopped

Ominous.

It’s time yet again to check in on developing MMO and multiplayer games that have maybe fallen off of the radar because that’s our duty to the genre and to you fine folks. This time around, we’ll be peeking in on The Black Death, the survival sandbox set in a grimdark medieval backdrop that is just absolutely coated in gray tones.

The last time we reported on this was in December of last year, where developer Small Impact Games apologized for months of radio silence and announced the Rebellion update, which was meant to bring harvestable trees, a new character leveling system, player-built stables, permanent Plague Zones full of new stuff, and a new siege map sometime in January. Obviously, we’re well past January and the Rebellion update has yet to surface, but there has been a delay announcement that stated the team’s intentions to get Rebellion out “in weeks rather than months” as well as a progress report in March with a look at a rebuilt inventory system.

The most recent post from July further explains what’s taking Rebellion so long, pointing to two engine upgrades, a “higher than average refund rate,” and the need to acquire part-time work in order to pay for development as reasons for the holdup. That said, the post insists that The Black Death’s development is not abandoned, stating, “If we did decided to stop development we would have the professional courtesy of announcing it but no need to worry, we have full intentions to build up to a full release.”
