The Daily Grind: Which MMO was the biggest contributor to killing the genre in 2022?

This provocative Daily Grind has been in our annual top-of-the-year rotation since 2016, and I’m gonna keep it that way because I think it forces people to really consider the games working hard to ruin our genre. We argued last year that crowdfund scammers, launched trainwrecks, metaverse hucksters, and corporate abusers could all take this title.

But this past year, I think it was the combination temport-crypto charlatans – that is to say, the companies that scavenge the remains of dying or abandoned MMOs and reanimate them to sell NFTs and blockchain currency to dopes, then rugpull both the games and the dopes as soon as they’ve made bank. Not only does this destroy the credibility of gaming, but it destroys the reputation and memories of those old games and makes it impossible for anyone to rescue them for real in the future.

Which MMO or MMO studio would you say was the biggest contributor to killing the genre in 2022?

At the turn of every calendar year, the MassivelyOP team assembles a traditional feast of annual content for your table. We recap the year, issue awards, highlight our favorite (and least favorite) stories, and gather your opinions together to send off the last year and welcome the new one. Grab a plate and take a bite out of this year-end Daily Grind!
