It’s not every day that a new MMO or pseudo-MMO drops in our inboxes and becomes a game I stick on my wishlist and not just in our newsroom, but Spellfarers did just that last night.
Canadian studio Digital Leisure bins the game under both MMO and online co-op; it’s basically a cozy sandbox title where you play a Witch who crafts, fishes, farms, and investigates mysteries, complete with social activities and player housing in a cute little cartoony town. It’s sort of like Harry Potter meets Palia meets Stardew Valley.
“Currently in Spellfarers, you can grow and gather ingredients, cast spells, build decorations, clothing, and items, and interact with the residents of Wenngrove, as well as other Witches playing in town,” the devs says. “You’ll have your own private Witch Hut to decorate as you like, and a Familiar to keep you company as you explore the town. As we continue with development, you’ll certainly trip over some bugs and game balancing issues. We plan on regularly patching Spellfarers as we continue to test and implement your feedback.”
We gotta note here that the indie team at Digital Leisure has five other games on Steam, one of which appears to be a casino-themed social MMO with a surprisingly high number of reviews (mixed).
Early access is expected July 29th, and the Steam page says the full launch is coming Q1 of 2025. The extra good news is it’ll be free-to-play – both in early access and at launch.
