Is Drakantos an MMORPG? A co-op OARPG? The answer to that question is the primary subject of Wingeon Game Studios’ June dev blog, which confirms that the title is “an MMORPG at its core,” though it’s also attempting to do things a bit differently from the standard formula of the genre.
While Drakantos will have familiar features like a populated open world, questing, and a market board, it will also offer up dungeon delves and map instances accessed by the Adventurers’ Guild feature, which opens up the game’s map and lets players take on different missions, all of which can be taken up by four players either in pre-made parties or via matchmaking that runs even as missions are in-progress. These missions can offer a wide assortment of activities and side objectives to complete, will dynamically adjust their difficulty based on party size, and offer selectable difficulties that can be unlocked as power level grows and guild ranks are unlocked.
Quests are also being done differently too: Instead of being the primary method of character advancement, quests will unlock features like systems, shops, and artifacts, all of which can be shared across the entire account. Quests can also be different based on the character or character archetype players select.
While the dev blog is mostly focused on classifying itself as an MMORPG, it also provides a few other tidbits of information, including a video peek at the character Liam that also showcases open world and dungeon gameplay, confirmation that future dev blogs will be releasing every three months while other teases will be shared on social media and Discord, and a very rough projection of launching in mid-2025, though that could change if Wingeon feels that Drakantos isn’t “an MMORPG designed for long-term play.” So yes, it is indeed an MMORPG.
