Generally, when a development studio elects to release a second side project while still working on a primary game, especially a Kickstarted MMO, that second game is pretty poorly received, and in some cases it can blow up spectacularly in the team’s face. So we’ll have to see just what happens to Icy North Games, the developer of Past Fate – a Kickstarted MMO that hasn’t even entered early access yet let alone launched in full – and its release of a new side project.
The game is called Tuonela, a single-player and co-op roguelike wave survival title set in the world of Past Fate. The game is done up in an intentionally crunchy ’90s 64-bit style, offering multiple heroes to play and unlock, quests to complete, some fishing and cooking to be had in what looks like a hub area, and different abilities to find in each run.
According to the Discord announcement, Tuonela is a smaller project that Icy North worked on in its off time, and the team reassures fans that it won’t take development time away from Past Fate and sales of the former will support the development of the latter, which may strike familiar to some of our regular readers.
On that subject, reaction to the title among members of the game’s Discord community appears muted considering there have been only some emoji responses (many of them being thumbs down), while the game itself has garnered two user reviews, which incidentally is the same number of all-time players at the time of this writing.
Past Fate’s first Kickstarter – launched at the end of February 2020 in a spectacular burst of unlucky timing – was canceled, but the second brought in just over $25,000 from backers.
We have launched a small side project that we have been working on during our off time.
