Could virtual reality take Firefall to the next frontier? Players are speculating madly following after seeing a Red 5 Studios job notice advertising for a VR gameplay programmer.
One of the descriptions of the position is to “prototype, design, and implement new virtual reality gameplay features” for Firefall. Red 5 is looking for a programmer that has familiarity with a virtual reality system (such as the Oculus Rift) and an “understanding of ‘presence.'”
Red 5 Senior Programmer Lutz did comment in the speculation thread on the obstacles of bringing any video game to virtual reality: “My guess is that big titles didn’t have enough time yet to adjust to VR. It’s tricky to get right since the control scheme is very different and there are subtle things that aren’t easy to get right. Another blocker is that the requirements for hardware are a lot higher. I would guess that only 1% of PCs would run big titles well on VR. If you fall below spec, you get dizzy easily because of frame rate jitter.”
