The Daily Grind: Which MMO boasts the best bard?

157

A player on Reddit recently asked one of the most pressing questions in the MMO genre today: “Where can I find a fun Bard-like class?” Though often posts on the MMORPG Reddit aren’t heavily populated, this one elicited dozens of responses and ideas. I’m telling you: Bards are awesome, and everyone knows it.

Naturally, the thread quickly devolved into bragging about just who could twist the most songs as a Bard in classic EverQuest.

Weirdly, though, outside of ArcheAge, a lot of the games people mentioned are oldish: Lord of the Rings Online, EverQuest II, Dark Age of Camelot, RIFT, Final Fantasy XI, Vanguard (sigh), AionShadowbane… even the Star Wars Galaxies emulator came up, though since it’s pre-CU, there are no “Combat Entertainers” in the NGE style.

I’m still a big fan of the Ultima Online bards — I have several, but my favorite is my disco archer. What about you guys? Which MMO boasts the best bard? And just why are so many modern MMOs omitting the archetype?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

The first bard I fell in love with was the one in EQ2.  I had never experienced a true support class before (yeah, I know it used to be moreso but I didn’t play EQ1) and was encouraged by how I wouldn’t be judged solely on my DPS, tanking abilities, or healing.  Instead, I did what any good bard would do… I showed up, cracked lots of jokes to keep the group smiling, and did a little of everything.  It was very encouraging, and honestly was my gateway character to MMOs.  Also, this:

While I personally preferred NGE version of entertainer (one of the VERY few things NGE did right), its still great to be able to play Galaxies.

Honestly, SWG had such a wonderful music system of it’s own, the Entertainers. People made music, danced and it was super fun to relax, added a ton of RP value. I never understood why such a cool idea was never replicated. I know, some how are just boom boom fighters can’t imagine, but for many others of us, it was great fun. It gave buffs, healed woulds and fatigue, so it was a real value ingame too.
I want that back!

melissamcdon The LotRO Minstrel was my first thought also.  The only other Bard-like character I’ve played was a brief stint as an entertainer in SWG, and that was a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away).
I imagine the DDO Bard is the quintessential Bard, but having never played it I really can’t say if it’s “the best”.  I’m not sure what the Aion Bard is like either, since I’ve never played Aion.

There is a rare weapon for Bards called the Mad Lute which is actually a great club.

How is it weird? I can’t even think of a modern MMO that has a bard.
Though, if you want the twist-style gameplay, picking up empowered seals and being a ret paladin in WoW will give it to you. :D

DDO Bards are great but a bit of a challenge to build. My DDO bard is my main character of all time and still is. I am currently working on a new Bard Tank. He is a Nordic Skald warrior bard that intimidates freezes his enemies and inspires his party. My main Bard is a Virtuoso crowd control specialist.

LOTRO yes.  closest thing to the kind of Bard character one imagines.
