Warhammer 40k gets a MOBA of its own

The popular dark universe of Warhammer 40,000 is heading not only to MMOs but to MOBAs as well.

Whitebox Interactive is working on a new title called Dark Nexus Arena that uses the grim setting of 40K to pit teams of four against each other. Players will fight in “the dark city of Commorragh and the gore-filled arenas of the Wych Cults” by taking sides with one of three initial factions: Space Marine, Ork, and Tau.

Early access is scheduled for Q2 2015 with a hopeful 2016 launch. You can watch the teaser video for Dark Nexus Arena after the jump.

**Fond memories of Dawn of war 2 inc**
Man in many ways its kind of perfect for a moba, I’m thinking like the Dawn of War 2 Engineer class in particular (The turret guy.) So much fun with tactical defensive gameplay!

doctoroverlord Lobstersaurus kalex716 I don’t know about any plans to do a 40k game, but that would be really awesome. I’m glad that Fantasy is getting some love though.

Lobstersaurus kalex716 If this rumor is true then THAT would be a game I would play!

Are they starting out with Warhammer Fantasy and planning on moving to Warhammer 40k?

kalex716 Lobstersaurus I actually did hear about that. I’ve been a huge fan of Total War since the fist Rome, so I have high hopes for it. I can’t wait for more specific details!

Lobstersaurus I heard recently that word got leaked about a Warhammer Fantasy Total War game or something. That could be big as the Total War engine could do mass combat on a scale that would do the strategy game justice.

XhimnaraPerento That game wasn’t even that bad. I know I enjoyed the hell out of it. Pretty much took the PVP from WAR and took out the powerleveling to the endgame from it. Also skaven.

I like where this is going because Dawn of War 2 is already kind of like a MOBA, only with way more subsidiary units to control on top of your hero.

Hero segregation by faction doesn’t really work for the MOBA genre IMO

doctoroverlord GW is definitely not known for their innovation – it seems to me that they’re perpetually a day late and a dollar short when it comes to giving their stamp of approval to any online adaptation to their games. They choked the shit out of WAR with their stranglehold on the IP and kept insisting that it be competitive with WoW (2 factions, remove the 3rd, no ability to customize the class armor beyond what they approved, etc etc etc.)
They’ve done this a few times, and now they’re jumping on the MOBA train (years after they’ve been a thing and now have stronger, more experienced competition). Again, setting themselves up for failure by trying to imitate what was already successful instead of innovate. It’s a damn shame too, because I love the IP itself, but they really just need to step the hell away from the online genre until they get their shit together.
