The Daily Grind: What stupid mistake do you keep making in an MMO?

In a lot of games, the E key defaults to use/interact/whatever. Get near a thing, press E, you do what you need to do. In Skyforge, that context-sensitive interaction is instead mapped to the space bar, while E is mapped to a different vital action. All logical and sensible, and the sort of thing that I should have picked up on after two minutes of play.

I’m several days into the beta and I cannot seem to grasp this reality. Every time I saunter up to an NPC I hit E, despite the big prompt telling me to use the space bar, because I am not a smart man. Sure, I could rail against the designers for mapping controls like that, but I’m pretty sure it’s mostly my fault at this point. What about you, dear readers? What mistake do you make that you should have unlearned?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

dirtyklingon Loyheta BalsBigBrother “none of them end up being any deeper or more interesting than wow style crafting…” Maybe I took that out of context. I though you were saying that those games didn’t add anything to crafting that couldn’t be found in WoW’s. I was just saying that in ffxiv you could craft high quality items with some work in the crafting game.

paragonlostinspace Loyheta Modrain I can understand that. I would only grind things out on my main and even though the seasonal events are supposed to be fun for the community… I wouldn’t touch them unless I wanted an achievement. Forcing myself to do the things for ‘fun’ only made me sick of them.

Stupid Mistake: Downloading new MMOs hoping they would be innovative or a change. Only to find them being a themepark on rails crap.

Not sticking with it long enough to really enjoy it.  Mainly to anything 2006 and later.  Other than Aion.  I know there’s great games out there, I just end up losing interest after about 2-3 months.  I’m pretty sure I’m not alone.

Getting dragged into the toxic wastelands of hate-filled crap that Official Forums tend to become. If I like a game and want to play it then I’ll want to do my research and often I end up on the forums looking at patch notes and guides and dev posts. It usually ends up going all downhill from there and next thing I know I’m up to my arse in trolls and white knights, arguing on the internet. >.<

But then it is a measure of whether I actually care about the game or not. If I don’t care, I don’t engage or participate. If I do, I will. If I -really- care then I’ll continue to participate on forums long after I’ve taken a break from the game itself.

Another mistake I don’t tend to make much these days is rolling a character without a plan for it’s progression to go along with the concept I actually rolled it for. I love alts and make many of them, but unless I have a specific plan for them in mind as I experiment with this fabulous combo of race/job/gender/background/whatever with the hair, they’ll make it out of the noobie area and to a town or city and get no further.

Nordavind LilyCheng  My friend’s cousin’s former neighbor’s pool guy once bought an RNG box that contained a Common Krait that gave him a fatal dose of venom.  True story.

imayb1 MJ Guthrie  Ha, yes that one gets me a lot. Been playing TSW for a while and load up something else, then get pissed off that I couldn’t dodge out of the fire because whatever other game it is doesn’t have a dodge option

I got a bit rather obsessed with getting the mount once I became aware of that achievement. Plus the whole reference to the Dead just made it something I had to do. Getting it became a burn out though for doing the various seasonal tasks. Once I got that achievement I’ve yet to do any other holiday related quests, tasks etc.

MJ Guthrie I still at times need to remind myself I am not playing my EQ1 monk, it’s been more than a decade ago and I still fall to my death at regular intervals.
