EverQuest’s newest progression server gets a name

The voters have spoken, and EverQuest’s newest progression server will be named Ragefire.

“While the vote is still live in-game, Ragefire is ahead by a SIGNIFICANT margin and that’ll be the name of our new time locked progression server,” Daybreak said.

The studio is continuing to take in player polls for various details on the progression server, although you can read about what decisions have been made so far on the official FAQ. Daybreak recently made an agreement with the EverQuest 1999 emulator to recognize the project in exchange for making sure that the emulator wouldn’t interfere with the release schedule of the progression server.

brelic Cramit Well I thoroughly enjoy it.  I never knew about it till the release of the Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen kickstarter happened and a fan site that I was visiting created a guild on it to play a similar game together while we waited for the Pantheon release.  Unfortunately the membership of the guild dropped off after the whole Pantheon team debacle and what not.

However I will have to say that it is great.  I enjoyed Fippy Darkpaw when it was released although stopped playing about a month or two in because we couldn’t find camps.  However Fippy went through the expansions pretty quick, I wanna say they were already in kunark and just about to release velious when I stopped, I believe.

In terms of P99, it has been on the Kunark Expansion for 4 years.  Velious was slated to come out at the end of May but with the written agreement with DBG, it is now slated for August 1st I believe.  The P99 servers will stay on Velious forever although they have talked about a possible “progression” server that they will create on the side of the PVE and PVP server that they currently have.  (Pve = Blue and PVP = Red)  Monday nights Sirken (GM of P99) has a stream he puts on and they talk about the servers politics, changes and future so always a good resource to check out other than the P99 forums.

Overall, the devs have done a lot of coding and work to bring the “Classic” feel of EQ back.  The devs are of the feeling that any expansions from luclin past were a removal of core EQ gameplay so they are sticking to velious and nothing else.  My experience thus far has been nothing but fun.  On the Blue server (PVE) there is a good amount of folks on, usually around 1400 while on the Red server (PVP) there is usually about 300-400 per night on peak hours.  There is a lot of item bloat on blue so it can happen that some random high lvl sees your lowbie and drops some gear on you but overall there are a lot of folks still playing and groups to be had.

If you enjoyed the early versions of EQ I can’t tell you how much I would recommend P99 to you.  I still think the DBG progression servers are fun as well but once they get higher in expansions, they just lose that original EQ feel, so I tend to stick on P99.  THere are plenty of streamers of P99, myself included, so definitely take a look.  Everything is pretty much original other than the grouping bonus on Red, which is awesome.  If you put a static together, Red is a great place to play for sure.

Check out project1999.com and the forums there.  They can get nasty at times but overall the community is absolutely awesome and is constantly growing.  If you love Old school EQ, P99 or the DBG progression servers are the perfect places for you, hands down!

Cramit  how is P99?

Zer0K TMK they don’t provide their own classic EQ servers because they didn’t have any of the code from classic.  This is from what I have heard and could be completely wrong but I have heard it stated from multiple places and seems reasonable to me.  Honestly I hope they are able to coincide with each other (P99 & Daybreak) at least and possibly work closer together since in the end we all love the same game.

I think a strong argument could be made for a true successor to EQ1 however as soon as you say that you typically get trolled to oblivion by players who don’t play these games saying that it would never work.  I agree with you and hope one of these days some devs figure this out.

Out of all of this all I care about is that P99 is finally getting some validity by Daybreak which I think is great.  I am constantly playing P99 as my primary MMO and it is really the only one worth my time from what I see of the industry landscape.  From what I have also heard is that the P99 Devs helped with some of the coding for the progression server since the Daybreak devs apparently lost it and even stated that they couldn’t go back to true EQ1 because of that without doing the ground work that the P99 devs did.  In the end it is a great day for the P99 community to get this recognition by Daybreak because in the end, we all love the same game.

After my experiences with Fippy during the release, I probably won’t be looking at the progression server at all especially if they are condoning Multi-boxing.  I suppose they need to pull in as many folks as possible but there is nothing “Classic” about it.  In any event I wish them well and hope they do well with this progression server.

If Daybreak recognizes P99 Classic emulator, and even goes as far as to be concerned that its existence would interrupt Daybreak’s own Progression Server release (so as to have a stipulation for P99 not to release during same time), then isn’t that basically acknowledging P99’s draw to many players?  Why then wouldn’t Daybreak provide their own classic EQ servers?
Let me go further.  Why then wouldn’t Daybreak support EQN to be developed with as much as possible core systems from EQ to help EQN be a successor for EQ?
EQ could still persist as a P99 managed classic experience for all those out there wanting that.  EQN could be the future alternative successor to EQ, and we can finally put this whole thing to bed (mostly).  As I think many out there want a modern worthy successor to EQ.

this server… just like Fippy progression server … will be a complete joke and mockery. If you are looking for a “classic” everquest experience you will be a blind lamb shambling to the slaughterhouse.

Spesh They are actually ENCOURAGING multiboxing…. the Everquest lead producer Holly Longdale bragged about doing it herself.
So just like allll the other Everquest servers, the game will be a silent, lifeless, ghostown with only multiboxers leading entire groups on autofollow and facerolling through content and perma-camping the very few valuable spawns that matter. have fun with that.

I think the “normalized” Ragefire will be included (triggered spawn) instead of the camp. Not sure though.

This is basically how I feel. I’m not sure I’ll stick with it past a certain point, but I know damn well I’ll play it for at least the first 30 levels.
