Albion Online goes to hell

The next time that someone tells you to “Go to hell!” you can respond, “Thank you, I will — in Albion Online.”

The upcoming sandbox shone a spotlight on its hellgate system this week as a counter-measure to the habit of zerging in such games. To encourage players to form smaller groups, the devs have limited entry into these small hell dungeons to five players who find and kill a Gatekeeper on the world map.

Inside the dungeon, players will face off against demons and a big boss in the hopes of obtaining valuable crafting mats. It won’t be safe by any measure, as the devs will also occasionally direct a second group to enter the same instance for a surprise PvP encounter.

TierlessTime yeah it’s the same thing I thought when the silver system required you to endlessly grind NPCs for literally everything in the game… not exactly the type of thing you’d expect from a PvP and crafting focused sandbox…

Rheem Octuris yolosw3g well if other people can enter it it’s not really an instance and there’s no five player groups in AO because there’s no groups period :P

I’m a fan of this game and I’ve follwed it since the beginning but the alst few decisions are really hurting what I thought was going to be a spiritual successor to UO. Maybe I was wrong in my thoughts. I keep seeing things that take away from the open world rather than enhance it. Much like the PVE islands this seems like a heavey handed fix to the zerg issue. STILL excited to see the end product, just having to adjust what I thought that product would be and hope they don’t go to far away from the original concept.

I always thought that this would be a fantastic idea. It should make running a dungeon (repeatedly) more than memorizing the layout and playing your class role predictably. This is definitely a game that I’m looking forward to.
