Crowfall developers discuss balance in a new Q&A video

This dude, but in motion.

If you want total and absolute balance for one-on-one classes in Crowfall, you will be disappointed. That’s the first answer in the new question and answer video with the development team, but it has more to it than that. The goal when designing the game’s classes is to give each one an area where it shines and several other areas where it doesn’t, and it’s up to the player to navigate to advantageous situations. As such, not all classes are balanced against one another, but they are balanced to be in a good place when navigating their respective areas of expertise.

The video also covers kneeling to support other players when you can’t possibly win a given iteration and dropping new structures onto a plot of land, but you don’t have to rely on our summaries alone. Really, you can watch the whole video just below.

AlexSmithWI Cosmic Cleric Gas Chamber Gerhan But that’s my point though.  Even in a group environment, more specifically, a PUG environment where two teams are formed automatically via an automatic queueing mechanism, you end up fighting 1v1 all the time.  You would have to be in a dedicated group that queues up together, and has members who know how to “peel off” counter-classes that are on you, to avoid this reality.
I played WoW PvP since before BGs existed, but (almost) never in a guild/dedicated group environment, so I ended up queueing alone, and having to face others 1v1 on a battlefield, even if the battlefield had twenty people going at it at once, all around you.  Generally speaking, there are exceptions, but you get the gist of my opinion/thoughts.
At the end of the day, I really hate counter-classes, as you inevitably end up 1v1 against them, and the worse thing is to not be able to have a chance to win vs. an opponent because of game mechanics (including stuns in this as well).
I don’t mind losing, as long as I lose going down fighting, and have a chance to win.  But when I’m not in control of my avatar, or a game mechanic removes the opportunity for me to win, that I hate.
My $0.02  :)

Cosmic Cleric Gas Chamber Gerhan Yes but then you bring a group and hopefully make it work :P.  Based on what we’ve heard so far 1v1 should not be the norm.

Hearing developers talk about balance when they have a cash shop that allows you buy gameplay affecting items, makes me wonder just how committed they really are to making a truly competitive system.  What was said sounds good, as usual, but the systems need to be seen working in tandem before they can claim that they’re all about making the game fun. Instead of just making the game fun if you’ve got money to blow.

Well delivered concise information in a relaxed conversational setting.  Good stuff.

Cosmic Cleric Gas Chamber Gerhan Well I think they usually have classes that excel at 1v1, but are less useful in group settings… at least they did in Shadowbane.

Greaterdivinity Gas Chamber Gerhan Yeah I’d agree wholeheartedly with this point, I mean I am all kinds of excited about Crowfall but I’m not sure I buy this bit as anything more than hype.  It isn’t purely by happenstance that we end up with balance issues in every MMO.  For instance, making stealth guy amazing at ambush kills sounds great… but it also sounds like every game ever, and people *hate* it in every game that tries this.

megaperky Cosmic Cleric Gas Chamber Gerhan I wouldn’t argue that at all.  Doesn’t negate my point though, that counter-class design sucks for the player on one-on-one battles, if you come upon your counter class. /shrug

Cosmic Cleric Gas Chamber Gerhan The mark of a good leader and dev is realising that some things are impossible and/or beyond your ability to do or make. So rather than try to sugar coat it you need to be upfront and honest with your customers about things.

Gas Chamber Gerhan The one thing I hate though, with this philosophy, is when I come upon an opponent, one-on-one, and the opponents class is a counter-class to mine.  I might as well get up and go make a sandwich at that point, because no amount of skill on my part will allow me a chance to win against that opponent, because the game isn’t balance for one-on-one battles.
Even in large battlefronts, the majority of the time you are fighting against one opponent.  If multiple opponents are against you at once, you die, just because of the numbers.
So yeah, its hard to balance one-on-one, but at the end of the day, that’s what fights boil down to.  Generally speaking, of course.

Gas Chamber Gerhan Everyone says that, but it’s super easy to talk about and significantly harder to do.
