War is coming: Check out the Warcraft movie trailer teaser

What’s 45% of your MMO playerbase lost in less than a year when you have a blockbuster movie on the way?

Eh, the clip is a good distraction, anyway.

The full trailer is due Friday.

Miserymachine  I dunno…..The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Hellboy 2, and Twilight all came out in 2008……

TronSheridan Gavin_Lafferty Ironwu  Exactly.  And when the general movie going population hears that it’s about humans fighting orcs they’ll be even more convinced it’s a ripoff.

SoMuchMass  Yeah, the golems are a neat detail.  Too bad no one told them orcs of the time should be green.

On the other hand, if everyone that has ever played WoW, which I believe is around 100 million, decided to see the movie and then we add the Warcraft and Hearthstone gamers, the fantasy film fans, fantasy MMO players, plus everyone who is into GoT (we got big wolves, now just need to see a dragon or two) then we come up with quite a potential audience.  Of course, they’re not all going to see it, but I think a significant percentage will.
Outside those areas, masses of people know of WoW through advertising and its use as an MMO template in TV shows and films and the Leeroy Jenkins meme is known globally, so it’s no longer the small cult game of 2004.
Then of course, given it’s Duncan Jones, a decent budget, the latest CGI and tons of post-production, it might actually be good, which makes the potential audience become even bigger.  Of course, it might also suck, but I still think it’ll make a profit ;-)

I’ll likely watch it but the teaser didn’t really get me excited to be honest.
If the full trailer is lots of music and action but very little dialogue then I have a strong feeling it’s going to be crap.

Seriously, I find if the trailers can string together an idea of story and engaging dialogue then I find it’s typically a good movie.
If it only has explosions, lots of lens flare & special effects, an excess of punching/kicking and grunting? Sure – maybe it’ll be pretty and/or the movie equivalent of fast food but there’s nothing mentally stimulating.

Having not really played WoW for more than 15 minutes (literally), I know that the single player Warcraft games have a reasonably rich lore so at least they won’t be at a loss for source material. Hope it turns out as a video game -> movie adaptation done successfully!

TronSheridan SoMuchMass Keydric His track record of making great movies. Moon and Source Code was never meant to make a big impact on the box office. I’m pretty certain that everyone involved with those two movies never thought they would make the next Inception, Man of Steel or The Dark Knight.
This movie have one extremely popular franchise and IP behind it, one of the biggest game developer and frikkin’ Legendary Pictures. They even pushed back the cinematic release to the summer, which means that they believe in the film and wants to make an impact on the box office.
At the end of the day, the director is just making the film – Its up to the production company and their marketing division to create the hype around the film.

orionite Its more like a teaser, to build some hype. I believe Star Wars, albeit being a bit longer, had a few of them before releasing the trailer, right?

Sorenthaz Don’t forget to mention Westfall at 0:07, you can see the farmlands with the iconic Harvest Golems. (At the right side of the shot)

Armsbend agemyth Mark Jacobs  That’s Winter is Coming. War is Comming is definitely a Warhammer thing.
