Shards Online’s third pre-alpha starts December 3

Citadel has announced that Shards Online’s third pre-alpha phase will soft launch for all backers at the $75 tier and above on December 3rd. All backers at $40 and above will get access on December 10th. Pre-alpha 3 is “one of the biggest updates to the game since we fully funded its development,” according to Citadel CEO Derek Brinkmann.

PA3 will see the cluster system go live, which is a “key step toward the vision of Shards‘ interconnected worlds,” since it will allow admins to connect maps and games and ultimately realize larger player-run universes.

Most of the game system tweaks in PA3 involve controls and the new player experience. You can get a glimpse of what that’s all about via the video after the cut.

Yorlik I´d like to mention, that Yorlik is ahead of Development in some fields. Same goes for some clever guys going with the Game of Thrones setting ;)

While SO is still in pre-alpha, the modding capabilities are already great. @Yorlik did good job explaining what we have been able to do :)

This game is already totally amazing, though in a very early stage.
I’m one of the early admins and run a server with a bunch of modding to
it, from easy things like persistent player backpacks, a changed idle
kicker which resets on chat, custom dialogs and plants / mobs to
intermediate stuff like a custom calendar with moonphases, a
differentitated dye and dye mixing system (for cloth, weapons and skin),
infective werewolves, worms eating up decaying corpses and custom
crafts like stonemasonry and metallurgy and more advanced stuff like a
connection to an external node.js based application with a web frontend,
database access and a possibility to serialize game objects to JSON and
store them as JSONB objects in postgres as well as integration of a
fast artificial network library for advanved AI
And we have just scratched the surface of the modding possibilities.
Others have build things like improved interactive spawner objects or an
entire guild system and stuff I’m not yet aware of.
I’m totally looking forward to the future of SO and have never regretted
pledging those $200 for early admin access.

Supreem_CS Vaeresyn INTERESTING. I will keep that in mind, thank you for clarifying! I think I’ve been under the impression that it’s purely medieval fantasy from the videos shown, but knowing that makes me more interested than before!

Vaeresyn See that is where we have failed. Our first world, Celador, is the only high fantasy home world we have planned. The overarching story of Shards Online is actually a science fiction story. We have plans as the game progresses to add more and more home worlds: Terminus (SciFi Horror), Colosseum (Ancient Roman), Londinium (Steampunk), etc

Supreem_CS Vaeresyn To clarify, it’s not that I’ve read in depth about all the lore — it’s that I’m burnt out on medieval fantasy. I’m really, really, really burnt out on it. I’m an avid MMO gamer and I’m just looking for something fresh (for myself) at this point, which is why the premise of creating your own shards and own gameplay is really appealing to me.

Vaeresyn How much do you know about the lore planned for the official servers? We have lots of stuff planned and in the works that we haven’t really talked about yet. Maybe we can try a bit better to get that information out there.

Just one minor clarification to the article: Clusters are coming at some point during Pre-Alpha 3 and aren’t actually going to be available right at release.
