The Daily Grind: What made you try out your first MMORPG?

I HAVE TO RENEW MY HOUSE COME ON

For today’s Daily Grind, I’m not asking which MMO you played first, and I’m not asking about your formative experiences. I’m asking why you came to the genre at all, what made you try out your first MMORPG in the first place.

I ask it because I almost didn’t try one at all. I was into 4X space games, mainly, with a bit of Elder Scrolls II on the side. My boyfriend picked a game box off a shelf at Media Play (hehe), and I looked at the cover. It looked like cheesy ’70s fantasy art with a dragon, the works. I remember snickering and scowling and telling him that this new online RPG, this “Ultima Online” thing looked super dorky.

But then we brought the box home and he made an account, and by the end of that first night, we were fighting over who got to play it. A second account was purchased, and that was that, and here we are. Maybe we’d have played EverQuest or Asheron’s Call first instead, or maybe we’d never have tried MMOs at all, but the one thing I can tell you is that Media Play, bless its heart, is directly responsible for the fact that I am writing this to you all right now.

Howsabout you? What made you try out your first MMORPG?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
