Following a heap of post-launch controversy and several months of silence, No Man’s Sky is back with a content update that adds a new survival mode and base building as key features. Version 1.1 also introduces mining harvesters, permanent waypoints, field equipment, save points, more resource elements, dead planets, a quick access menu, and more visually interesting planets.
“We’re calling it The Foundation Update, because we have added the foundations of base building, and also because this is putting in place a foundation for things to come,” Hello Games explained. “This update will be the first small step in a longer journey. We hope you can join us.”
In a Tweeted defense of Hello Games’ Sean Murray yesterday, former Sony exec Shahid Ahmad suggested that Murray and his team had this update mapped out years ago and that critics of the game’s launch and post-launch silence were “turncoats” and “scum.”
“People jumping to conclusions about the character of a friend of mine and who threw him under the bus of their large audiences can fuck off. And I think we all know exactly who I’m talking about. He told me about the update plan in 2013 and has stuck to his bargain. Crucified by so many who don’t know him, he has more talent, vision, drive, determination and chutzpah than the entire hateful mob together. The people who really disappoint me are those who should know better and who just turned their backs. The turncoats are scum. I’d rather be poor and disgraced than be a dirty back turning scumbag when a friend and colleague needs support. It’s not like he or his colleagues were on holiday or buying cars and shit. They were *killing* themselves to make something new.”
