Sea of Thieves artists talk about the game’s visual style

What do you think about Sea of Thieves’ art style? The game has received all kinds of praise for its water effects and skyboxes, but the cartoony nature of the environment and characters has its appeal as well.

Rare trotted out its artists to talk about the visual design of Sea of Thieves, from concept art to implementation, in the most recent Tales from the Tavern podcast. There’s also a preview of The Art of Sea of Thieves book, which you may gift to us on our birthdays. We’re sure it will be gorgeous.

Meanwhile, players are still recovering from the good and the bad the closed beta, which shut down on Wednesday. Eurogamer has a really interesting article up about the joys of captaining your own sloop and simply exploring the world.

“Solo life on the ocean waves is idyllic,” the author writes. “Sails flap, rigging creaks and waves gently splosh, as the sea slowly hypnotises you. One moment it’s an azure paradise, the next a mountainous stormy rage. It’s terrifying and beautiful and stunningly believable, and it is Sea of Thieves’ undeniable star asset.”

I don’t like cartoony styles for the most part but here I think it’s pretty near perfect.

The water is incredible in this game. I could watch it for hours.

I like the look of the game world, but don’t care for the cartoon style characters. The deal breaker for me as to whether I’ll play it or not though is whether I can play 3rd person. If it’s first person I won’t play. I don’t do FPS’s for one solid reason, I never get over feeling nauseous/motion sick.

I was looking forward to playing this game as a “fill in” until Camelot Unchained Beta was released… until I found out you can ONLY play in 1st person… deal breaker for me as well.

I can see where it might appeal to some, but the characters are a solid ‘Not really’ for me. The rest of everything isn’t too bad, and there’s certainly quality in what they do… but it just doesn’t fit my taste.

I wish them well, I might even play some, but odds are that it will be a very minimal with friends on rare occasions thing…

“What do you think about Sea of Thieves’ art style?”

I think it’s RARE doing what RARE does. Personally, I think RARE’s art style has always been their greatest asset. I find them on par with Blizzard – and I find those two companies the pinnacle of consistent video game art.

I’ll give them consistent… just not to my particular taste. The art for WoW was the thing that my group was the least happy with until they started dumbing down the talent trees pre-MoP.

I’m a fan. It doesn’t exactly mimic the old-style Sid Meier’s Pirates art style, but it reminds me of it. Pirates lend themselves well to cartoony depiction with the over the top fashions and ridiculous speech tropes. Otherwise they’re essentially muggers on the sea.
Age of Conan tried to depict a less stylized pirate, and you end up with sailors wearing thrift store clothes and gold teeth. I’m not even a SoT fan, but I think the art style looks much more engaging

The only MMO where I like cartoony style is WoW. You cant even tell its cartoony in modern expansions. Im not a fan of style in Sea of Thieves (excluding water and weather effects that are great), but if in SWToR cartoonish graphics held me from playing it, I dont think it will be the problem in SoT. Im more worried that it will be impossible to play for solo players.
