SMITE doesn’t restrict itself to only ancient deities from various pantheons for its lineup of combatants – it also draws on those giants of myth and legend who wield god-like powers or influence. At the opening of Hi-Rex Expo today, Titan Forge Games announced that two heroes of the round table are coming to SMITE’s table: King Arthur and Merlin are joining the battle ranks as gods 99 and 100.
The warrior King Arthur is further along in development and will release first, with Merlin and his three spheres of magic coming after. Check out a sneak preview of Merlin and King Arthur in the video below, along with reveal trailer for the new Godslayer Ares tier 5 skin.
After those highlights, we learned more about the rest of the gods coming for Season 6. Jormungand, the world dragon (who also happens to be one of Loki and Angrboda’s children along with Hel and Fenrir), will be god number 101. His arrival heralds the end of Ragnarok. And for SMITE’s birthday, long-requested fan favorites Horace and Set will finally join the fray. After that, a new pantheon with a new powerful god will be introduced.
More news, details, and interviews are on the way, so keep an eye out for our continuing HRX coverage!
I might have been on board if their god design wasn’t the most fucking boring thing imaginable. They just recycle the same tired old ideas over and over again.
I’m just expect just another warrior and just another mage. Ring a ding ding.
Combo warrior, stance dance mage.
You got to be kidding, that’s actually interesting. 3 Stances for Merlin and Arthur is full combobased.
Yup, it’s going to be pretty different it seems.
Is Smite Tactics a dead game? Still see listings for it but it seems to be a forgotten game.
Seemed decent, but definitely had nothing that would set it apart.
You mean ‘Hand of the Gods’?
Yeah that’s been dead in the water for awhile now. They said that they’ll keep the servers warm but further development had been canned for some months.
It basically could only ever get a few hundred players at most, and I imagine most folks who bought the two supporter packs did it largely for the two Greek-Roman/Roman-Greek SMITE skins (Aphrodite got a Venus skin, Bellona got an Enyo skin).
Game was interesting-ish but for me I’d never really be able to stand it as a PvP primary game. It was basically made during the period where HiRez was obsessed with monetizing TCG mechanics.
I feel like Arthurian stuff was revealed to be coming earlier this year.
In general though they’re expanding it to encompass all types of mythology/folklore. They did have some inklings of that with characters like Medusa, Hercules, and Sun Wukong, but now they’re kind of just going all-out.
On one hand it means they aren’t creatively limited to certain things. On the other it does diminish the spirit of the game in some ways.
Smite was good while they where sticking to actual gods in my opinion. I started loosing interest when they started throwing in things like cartoon squirrels and such. I thought Medusa was around the peak and although not immortal was a Gorgon and and desended from gods. I think Smite had the potential to be a lot better.
While a unique theme nonetheless, it’s what turned me off. If it was generic fantasy where you choose regular characters, like in Paladins, or even better – call characters classes and allow players to pick their gender and customize their face/hair/skin, then I might’ve been playing this game on a daily basis.
Except that there are those diminute creatures in mithology. It’s not just gods.
Wait. Kings and wizards of myth now? Also, when is the holy trinity making it’s appearance?
I need that in my life. Hyped for Jesus
Maybe that’s the new pantheon coming that rises over Mount Olympus! =P
First time I heard King Arthur was a deity…
Guess next we will see Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan and Oda Nobunaga… what a F-ING joke.
SMITE hasn’t been about strictly deities for a long while now. It’s been more about mythology/folklore than strictly gods and goddesses.
Guan Yu is also not a god, he’s a saint. It’s a pantheon with mythological creatures.
You’re too mad for such small detail.
I still think that Smite’s general idea (of specifically including gods/goddesses/mythological figures) is one of the best things about the game. Definitely makes an interesting switch up with the third person camera too compared to other MOBAs. Glad to see it’s still getting support for its players unlike some other HiRez franchises
