The Daily Grind: What great MMO grouping experiences have you had lately?

Still crazy after all these years.

One gaming night that I look forward to every week is Friday evening, because I know that then I’ll be dropping all other MMO interests to hang out with my regular Dungeons and Dragons Online group for a few instance runs. We may run dungeons on higher difficulty than is prudent and have rather death-prone Warlocks dashing right into the brunt of enemy fire, but we have our fun and it’s generated quite a few memorable stories.

But I don’t want to bore you with my dusty yarns! I would much rather hear from you about any great grouping experiences that you’ve had in MMORPGs lately. Do you have any regular group runs? Had a good time spontaneously teaming up with others? Let’s share those in the comments!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Just had a great run at veteran Bloodroot Forge (TESO). Tank has been using ice staff very skillfully, so I had to worry only about DPS (and boy I had to about one of them). Compared to yesterday’s fiasco it was great experience – team working towards common goal step by step and finally bringing down the Big Bad.

Just about every dungeon run in FFXIV was great. There was one where I had to leave because of some very annoyed person, but the overall ratio of “good groups of random people” was awesome, much better than what I remember in WoW. Maybe I got lucky or maybe it was because of my data server (whatver it is that also hosts Faerie world) but yea, can’t say anything bad about most random people I grouped with.

Did the Mines of Tethyamar with an old buddy from Sweden, I was one level above and somehow the Dungeons scaled to eleven, we got pulverized, made through with the help of more than a few rez cakes.

People still group in MMOs? Who knew?

Been about a year and a half or so for me, but then I’ve been playing only single player games for the same time.

Will likely join some old friends when the new DAOC freeshard goes live in January.

For me, ESO wins hands down on this. Guild groups, random groups, pick-up groups, pretty much all have them have been great experiences. I don’t know what it is about ESO, but it just seems to attract a friendlier and more patient class of player than other MMOs.

I honestly haven’t done group content in a long time other than hanging with my friend’s kid in free Destiny. I went AFK for a work call and he did the whole questline for me while I was AFK. I actually feel kind of bad about that.

Last week I downloaded LotRO thinking I would try the Legendary Servers. Decided against it and went to Landroval where I left off leveling a 35 Runekeeper (from last year). This was a game I had trouble getting into because I couldn’t find groups for instances (starting with the Forsaken Inn in Lone Lands, and continuing into Agamaur). Mind you, this was my highest level toon ever in this game.

A few hours over a few days I tried doing some of the quests in Agamaur. I tried finding a group to tackle Garth Agarwen , but couldn’t. I kept dying the further I got in and could not complete any of the simple quests – I thought the instances would be a repeat of my trying to do the Forsaken Inn. I almost gave up again but started asking in world chat for a group. Found a small group, ran all the content there over an hour and had a really fun time doing it. I was a bit surprised (or maybe I had just forgotten) how amenable some of the community are to helping out.

Now I am just waiting for the December sale to purchase the packs to do places like the North Downs and beyond (for the life of me, I can’t justify paying close to 4000 points for those quests, considering I purchased the game at launch and those quests were in the game then!).

I was putzing around leveling in WoW the other day and the Mammoth March came through and I hopped on the train. It was literally just a raid of people all /following the person in front of them while riding mammoths or other big mounts and walking slowly. We did a wave back and front (it was pretty embarassingly bad) and just basically chatted with random people the whole time while touring zones around Stormwind.

I think we spent like 2 hours doing it and it was silly and goofy and the best grouping experience I’ve had in any MMO in a long time.

The Great Gnomeregan Run in WoW is the best grouping experience I’ve had. It was a silly time with nice people for a good cause. Still have my gnome parked on Scarlet Crusade for next year.

Eh, I haven’t ran group content in an MMO in some time. That’s quite depressing when you think about it!
