Check out another 10 minutes of gameplay footage from Anthem

Yo.

Everything has hidden depths. Anthem definitely does. Literally, it’s got a mission named Hidden Depths, and today’s latest burst of gameplay footage from IGN covers 10 minutes of running through Hidden Depths. The result is that they are not particularly hidden but are instead pretty clearly seen. They’re right there, and they involve shooting things. A lot. That sounds a bit more like a hidden shallow than anything, but that’s splitting hairs.

The video in question covers the whole mission but does include certain edits for pacing purposes, so it’s possible that your own playthrough will not simply be a 10-minute affair. It’s also being run with a three-player team of a Storm, Interceptor, and Colossus. It’s a good chance to see the various Javelins working together, keep an eye on how the combat functions in a team, and generally enjoy what’s on display for fans ahead of the game’s demo events and incoming launch.

I’m excited for this one. Could care less about the VO chatter, I’ve heard far worse. Resident Evil 1 and 2 anyone? yeah, exactly. Anyway, it looks fun and that’s all I ask for from a game.

How old is resi 1?

One question first: are you “locked” into a suit, or can you switch between them as you wish and level them separately? Kinda like you can switch Warframes.

In the end, I can overlook the horrid VO because it only affects the story missions (I guess). I can overlook the screen shake, assuming there is a toggle option somewhere (if there is not, then it’s unplayable for me). But I cannot overlook that this is coming from EA, and a month in (after the review cycle) the game will start to get gangbanged by the finance and marketing divisions wanting more revenue.

You switch between, but only between missions.

It looks like alpha gameplay, but they have only 1 week left to open beta.
We all could judge their work then.

Reader

Lol if that looks like alpha gameplay I hope you never play warframe. You might flip your desk in rage

The graphics are ok, but gameplay?

Just go from 1 point to the other killing some non-attractive mobs to finally kill a boss. And there is an irrelevant puzzle to open a door. Have I missed something?

Imo, also voices and animations should be improved before release.

Reader
Bannex

Again don’t play warframe lol. The VOs are terrible for sure, I agree but honestly care very little about that if the game is fun. The animations are solid, def better than ESO or any other mmos lol

Thx for the tip xD

Sorry that sounded like I was talking about warframe in that whole paragraph. Warframe is alpha quality crap. Anthem looks 10 times better in all ways except maybe the VOs which honestly who cares?

The spring of 2019 was touted as the renewal of epic gaming and quality titles. “Finally an end to the dry spell of quick cash grab, low effort AAA titles.”, they said. “These will hold you off until Cyberpunk releases (still 2 years away).”, some exclaimed.

FarCry: New Dawn and Metro Exodus release the same day. Anthem, a week later. Devil May Cry 5 and The Division 2 the following month. I’m suppose to be hyped!

But I’m just not… Not from what these titles have shown. Even more so because of what they haven’t shown and seem to be hiding. I just upgraded to a shiny top tier PC and Path of Exile and a hand full of already established titles appear more compelling.

Is it just me? Am I doing something wrong? Am I a terrible consumer is trying to get all the information and eat up the hype but the only thing that comes to mind is.. meh?

It isn’t just you. The hype train has crashed and burned too many times over the last few years. At least Ace Combat 7 is looking to be a good game…

You may just be burnt out or jaded for good reason. Taking a break for a few months can possibly change that.

Myself, I’m looking forward to Anthem, Division 2, DMC 5, Sekiro, Code Vein, Days Gone, FFXIV expansion, ESO expansion, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Resident Evil 2 remake.

Will everyone of these titles blow me away? Not likely. Am I going to enjoy playing them all? Yes, even the ones that end up sucking.

The industry is like any entertainment venue. Movies are a good example. Many movies are just not very good. Some are astounding. Some are seen as crap yet garner a following. Some are complete trash. Does that stop me from still seeing movies and getting excited for them? No.

The environment design and enemy design look great, TTK on the enemies seems ok to me, and overall it appears competently done. But (leaving aside for the moment the quality of the dialogue and voice acting), it just feels completely lacking in character and individuality. Move from waypoint to waypoint clicking on things and shooting/slashing/bashing/stomping generically alien armoured crabs and canines and insects, fight a boss that’s just a big rocky humanoid on fire, there wasn’t a single thing in the whole video that felt new or exciting to me.

As for that dialogue and voice acting, the video does say it’s an alpha build so I’m hoping that’s all placeholder stuff and they’re still finalising the writing and audio? If not, sheesh.

VA and dialogue has never changed from an alpha to be released in two months in the history of video games. This is it.

Reader

That’s why I was so surprised to see the video labelled as alpha gameplay – I wouldn’t expect any of the launch content for a game of this scale to still be in alpha when launch is this close, even if they hadn’t already had a beta phase, so wondered if this was old footage that’s now passed embargo or content which won’t be in game at launch. Unless they’re just sticking an alpha label on to say “please don’t criticise this”.

I rolled my eyes at it until I played it: it isn’t as cringe worthy when you are in game.

These gameplay videos are chopped up to make them look more “intense” or something, but in game they don’t talk that much & the dialogue is more casual/chatty than dramatic.

Kudos to the artists. Environments are very nice, the level seem quite varied in terrain, though I feel that some of the effects are a bit too flashy in areas, especially during the boss fight (read: completely cover the entirety of the screen). Unfortunately, the gameplay doesn’t impress. There’s no hook, no mechanic that really makes it stand apart from every other 3rd person shooter, nothing that draws my attention outside of the environment art. Maybe I’m missing something?

It looks like they were trying to marry Warframe with Titanfall. Ninja-esque, albeit MUCH slower, with the weight of a big mech. On that video it looked like the trash mobs were bullet sponges, rather than swathing through warm butter – design mistake imo.

It’s the same problem as the Division. Fantasy games get away with damage sponges because I can say “Well who knows how much damage a fireball would do to a magic monster?”

When you try to translate that to guns, it feels silly. We all know how deadly a single bullet can be. So when you empty 50 bullets into a single human-sized enemy and it still has most of its health, it just feels ridiculous.

This is not me bashing the game – I don’t care about the game :

Anthem has the worst voice acting for a major release I’ve ever heard.

heh I haven’t played them all. I think this is worse than Dinklage. At least he has a pleasing voice. This is bad voice acting + annoying, grating voices. Like…I don’t want to hear these people even speak.

Did they hire some Youtube vloggers to write their dialogues?! 🤢

One way to cut costs it seems is to hire, or get interns, super low-end to write and voice act your games. This one is Mystery Science Theater bad.

“Another map! It’s a cataclysm. Why didn’t I see that?”

Even for “Go to this place and press a button, now go somewhere else and push a button…” quest lines, that dialogue was atrocious.

It’s pretty clear they’ve put minimal effort into the writing on this game. They’re probably just banking on having an addictive enough loop to keep players around for that sweet MTX money.
