Warframe’s 2019 roadmap includes three new suits, cinematic quest, and Melee 3.0

Digital Extremes has an action-packed 2019 in store for Warframe players, with an increased focus on “on-going shorter turn-around content” rather than slower, large content updates.

Some of the additions on both the near and far horizon include a trio of new warframes (two of which are named the Hildryn and the Wisp), the next cinematic quest titled New War, a tile remaster of Gas City, a new type of daily and weekly challenges, and the Planes of Duviri, which will bring a new area and faction to the game this fall.

A “Melee 3.0” revamp is in the works, as is a better new player experience, trading improvements, and a closer look at difficulty options.

The studio has also started to promote this year’s TonnoCon, which is taking place on July 6th in London, Ontario.

So a few thoughts on Warframe and DE.

First, the live streams are great. They are informative and relevant even for the novice player. I’m not sure what the formula is, but while I will fall asleep during a SC update, I’m very engaged during a Warframe live stream.

I’ve been playing Warframe on the Switch almost exclusively now. I had to fiddle with sensitivity settings to make it comfortable, but I’m very happy with the port. I’m not sure I need cross-platform play but I certainly would like to make sure that all my work carries over from one platform to the other.

Last, so far I have to admit that DE is more than a cameo darling. That is to say, they aren’t just a popular dev because it is popular to support them. They have earned their success. And while they may face, bugs and limitations and there may be missteps ahead (who knows), I’m very happy supporting them because they care about players new and old. They are not looking for the quick buck. They are banking on Warframe for the long haul and that means taking care of their players.

I think they’re easy to watch because Rebecca and Steve are so charismatic and casual about the presentation. It’s almost like a friend telling you about a game you both like.

Huh. Yes, that is exactly it! Nicely done. Thank you.

I’m not sure I need cross-platform play but I certainly would like to make sure that all my work carries over from one platform to the other.

I never expected even that to be possible, if they can pull it off it’ll be amazing!

For those who don’t have the time to watch the whole vid, cross-platform discussion is from 51:45 to 54:00. Teal deer is that the contracts they have with the various platforms complicate things (and the games currently doing cross-play all negotiated their contracts with the platform holders much more recently), and cross-play would be almost impossible to do with the way they develop and change the game, but sharing account progress between platforms is something they’ve got people looking into.

Oh, yeah! Check out this bug. Heh. DE is creative and fun, even with their bugs. Start at 36:35 if the link doesn’t work.

I have enjoyed how DE has been soliciting feedback from the community. There have been several polls re. what the teams should be focusing on. The data has been aggregated and it’s clear DE is listening to some of it.

But I will bet good money on the fickle nature of the same community when it comes to their memory of their complaints, say in 6 months’ time. I for one have LOVED the open world content, but not everyone does, and the consensus is to finish off several other features and add more story/quests. That’s fine! But by July, I guarantee a lot of voices will be clamoring for “more large-scale content” and “fulfill promises that were made to add features”.

I’ve liked most things they’ve done though I’m partial to their story content. They did some really cool intimate story content in the game but it’s really the minority of what’s there.

It’s such a cool experience when you play it and learn the details of things. I’m fine with the Open World stuff, but I was good with the closed worlds and story content.

If they did some big huge open world with other people running all around in it too (not just small groups, but lots of people running around and always open to others like an MMORPG) I’d love that, though it would be a different game than it is now.

Personally, I’m ready for them to do Warframe 2 and make it a true open MMORPG. It wouldn’t mean Waframe 1 would need to stop existing or anything. But 1 is doing really well still so that probably isn’t on the table yet. They wouldn’t want to split their focus I guess.

I think it would be cool as an evolution of their open world design if there were battleground-style persistent open maps that could support larger groups of players (kind of a smaller-scale Planetside 2); as it stands Fortuna is a lovely open word but the formula’s at its sell-by date, y’know? A third one would feel stale.

I was thinking the other day that co-op sieges would be very entertaining. There’s already a mission type where NPC factions are pitted against each other and player energies nominally play a role towards their success/failure. I’d love an open-world version of this, like a battlegrounds theme, where players could jump into a conflict zone.

Reader
sophiskiai

Ooh, an open-world Crossfire or Invasion would be awesome!

The Plague Star event felt a little bit like that, but without enough direct conflict between Grineer and Infestation forces.

Yeah, and it’s never really quite certain if Vay Hek is pro- or anti-Infestation. I’d love to see a pitched battle between Grineer and Corpus, though, and the ability to choose a side to support, thereby potentially leading to conflict with other Tenno.

I really feel like the game should provide more consequences for your choices. I like the current syndicates system, in that you can change them if you want — your allegiance is not permanent. I would like it if you could only access specific stations if you are certain levels; or that if you choose to support Corpus rather than Grineer in a Crossfire mission, that you could run into Tenno supporting the other side and potentially engage them.

Reader
sophiskiai

I always find the syndicate stuff kinda awkward, because of the way they don’t want to restrict content so you can e.g. do the Harrow Quest and visit Iron Wake even if the Red Veil hate you, the Silver Grove quest even if New Loka hates you, and Arbitrations even if the Arbiters hate you. For similar reasons, if they restricted access to relay stations they’d need to change the way Baro’s visits work.

Agreed about the lack of consequences, still waiting to see what (if anything) happens from our light & dark quest choices…

Probably the closest thing they’ve got at the moment is visits from Zanuka and the Grustrag Three, but since getting all the Invasion weapon parts I only run Grineer or Corpus invasions if there’s a potato BP on offer and usually stick to quick Phorid assassinations for Detonite / Fieldron / Mutagen.

My concern with putting PvP into Crossfire is how easy it’d be to one-shot squishies? I’ve not dipped my toe into Conclave, so am not sure how the changes to abilities & mods work there… maybe they could make it a PvEvP thing where both sides are racing to kill mobs and complete objectives rather than directly fighting each other?

I reckon the big difficulty with larger groups would be how to balance things, given the massive damage output of some high MR players compared to even a few dozen low MR players. During the devstream they spoke about using Empyrean / Railjack to trial a new damage balancing system that removes stacking of things like crit / status / multishot, so if that’s extended to the whole game then larger groups could work?

Reader
kvlt_vonnegut

Honestly I think the biggest hurdle would be the netcode. It’s just not the kind of thing you can run on their current P2P matchmaking. My one sore spot with Warframe at this point is the lack of dedicated servers; it just feels chintzy for a title that’s the next best thing to the US Mint for printing money. Implement that, and a whoHOST MIGRATION IN PROGRESS

So excited for the year ahead!

The first piece of content, involving the big Exploiter spiderboss wandering around Orb Vallis near the Temple of Profit, has me braced for heavy feels – Deck 12 is mentioned a little bit during the Fortuna intro quests, and the audio logs scattered around the Orb Vallis reveal more about how it tragically ties into the backstories of Eudico, Biz, and Rude Zuud. Maybe we’ll also get some backstory for Garuda?

The concept art for Gas City Amalgams looks like the Corpus are doing more experimentation with Sentient technology.

The single piece of teaser concept art they showed for The New War, and one line Steve spoke about it, seems to confirm speculation that

mild spoilers for The Sacrifice & Chimera quests
Natah’s mother has spent the centuries since the Old War travelling from the Tau System to the Origin System through interstellar space at sublight speeds

What’s got me most intrigued is the new Duviri faction and tileset, given the mention of “planes” I’m wondering if it involves travelling through the Void to some other dimension?

Is this the entire roadmap or just a highlight? No time to watch the clip right now, would be grateful is you could clarify that thaaanks

…yes yes I am being a glutton, I want to know if there’s something else to expect aside from what you mentioned in the article!

PS: it’s tEnnoCon with an “E” :P

There’s a bunch more stuff in the devstream (and the official devstream overview link) than listed in this article, and even then the roadmap in the devstream is comprehensive for the first half of the year but we’ll probably get some as-yet-unannounced stuff in the second half.

Watching low-poly “infestation-designed” Warframe videos makes me want Anthem to succeed even more (even though I don’t believe it’s possible given the history of BioWare games lately).

Hopefully, they’ll dump whole infestation-themed design sooner or later and move on to more mech-y / tech-y / slick costumes rather than tin cans with rotting flesh inside (and sometimes outside).

Reader

Huh? So…hopefully Warframe will become a different game?

Reader
3dom

Yes. Because this one I’ve uninstalled, no time to play it with all the modern games I have (+ guaranteed hit TD2 is coming in March and possibly Anthem in February). It was fine in 2013-16 – when there were barely any decent third-person view shooters – but now it’s just too dated, both graphics and game design.

Reader

Well it’s not getting any more “modern”, so if that’s your criteria…have fun?

CapnLan

That’s why they spend so much time revamping the game.

The new melee 3.0 system is being built as the current system feels old and clunky. They’re also dropping 32 bit support soon so that they can further optimize the game and push graphic upgrades. The Corpus city is being revamped to look better graphically but also to support the parkour system which didn’t exist when it was first built.

So while you aren’t entirely wrong about the game feeling dated, you’re still a bit off base when the dev team has been consistently revamping both systems and graphics to modern standards.

Like the mech-y tech-y Hildryn ‘frame shown in the header image and wallpaper link, that’s going to be the first new ‘frame released this year?

??? there is 1 infested warframe
or are you talking about wanting warframes being more metallic than biomechanical?

the entire things about warframes is that are basically flesh golems for you to basically mind control.

Reader
kvlt_vonnegut

I’m sure they’ll read this, see the light of 3dom’s wisdom, and retcon literally the entire game.

Reader
sophiskiai

Well the first thing Steve wrote on the roadmap whiteboard was renaming Warframes as “Javelines”, so they’ll probably give them a graphical rework at the same time :)
