Leaderboard: What’s the greatest MMO soundtrack of all time?

59

In collaboration with Justin’s Jukebox Heroes column, we’re taking stock of our readers’ opinions on the best MMO soundtracks of all time in today’s Leaderboard. The top 10 will be featured in upcoming Jukebox Heroes columns – that’s our long-running column all about MMO music!

We’ve put together a list of likely candidates here, but we’re also welcoming write-ins, so if your favorite more obscure MMO didn’t make the poll, please do pencil it in in the comments so we can count it up there too. Y’all know we love our obscure and old MMOs around here, so it’s a good bet that if a soundtrack a bit off the beaten path comes up enough, we’ll eventually feature that too.

On to the voting, and remember, you get up to three votes.

Wildstar, hands down. No game has ever had an OST stick with me the way it has.

If we’re talking soundtrack alone? Phantasy Star Universe, hands down. If there’s one thing that old man SEGA excels at, it’s rockin’ music. In the realm of butt rock, our liege of nonsensical lyrics reigns supreme as king eternal. Unchallenged. Beloved by all.

All of the newer Phantasy Star titles had some pretty bangin’ grooves. Not that the plinky-plonk of the very first title didn’t have its place, but it doesn’t hold a candle to what followed. This is one of the many reasons the Dreamcast was so well loved, as an unending cavalcade of good music. The games might not have been the best examples of their genre… but the music? Oh, the music.

Well, that’s not fair. Skies of Arcadia was one of the greatest JRPGs of all time, if not THE greatest JRPG. Even if it isn’t #1, it comes remarkably close and the only people who wouldn’t agree are those who’ve not played it. Fight me! There is no way you can win. Skies was exemplary.

And yes, as good as WildStar’s soundtrack was? Pretty much any contemporary Phantasy Star blew it away.

IT IS A BATTLE AGAINST THE DAWN.

WildStar has nothing on that. Sorry!

…now I want to play Phantasy Star Online again. Was this your Machiavellian plan, MOP? Gasp! You fiends!

Oh man, I’m absolutely ASTOUNDED that you don’t have the Anarchy Online music as an option! One of the oldest MMO’s still going and amazing music. Have a listen:

Wildstar. No other game I’ve played has struck emotions from me as I listened to their music. Even though a game’s music is designed to keep a player engaged in the world, Wildstar goes beyond to make it a living testament to the characters, regions and factions they represent. Even though my beloved Nexus may be gone, I will forever listen to its melodies no matter what.

Jeff Kurtenacker is a genius, and it is a crime that WildStar’s OST is systematically being erased from the internet. Thank god the community is working to salvage it. Hands down my favorite OST for any video game and some of my favorite orchestral music period. Jeff captured the soul of WildStar in every note. It is so deserving of its (as of typing this) 13 percentage point lead on this poll! 8D

I’d vote for World of Warcraft’s Wrath of the Lich King soundtrack, followed very closely by LOTRO.

Btw, just check out Jukebox Heroes and Battle of the Bards podcast. Syp & Friends do a great job on mmo music.

Thanks Bree :) I loved this article and I do believe many of the mmo veterans here did too! I was on my Discord the other night and trying to describe the feeling of the in game music in GW 2 to folks. Well, one lady I have played WoW with for some ten years now remarked, oh well I never listen to the in game music. Her loss., LOL!

Thanks also to ALL of you good folks that have decided to share your tunes. WOW! I loved them all. A good soundtrack can truly put you into a special game playing mood I think!

Pedro Camacho is the man! Whatever other problems one might have with STAR CITIZEN (and there are many), the soundtrack is epic, diverse and awesome.

It’s also the one part of STAR CITIZEN that’s not late.

Final Fantasy XIV for me personally, the soundtrack was a big reason why I got sucked into that game.
