Final Fantasy XIV is coming to Xbox One, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer vows

If you come to San Francisco...

At the London Microsoft presser today, Square Enix announced a crapton of its games are headed to Xbox Game Pass. None of them is an MMORPG, so unless you’re a die-hard fan, you might have just closed the PR and gone on with your day.

However, according to The Verge, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer gave some hope to Final Fantasy XIV fans when he told press that the hugely popular MMO is in discussions to launch on the platform.

“Rest assured that we will be bringing that game to Xbox,” he reportedly said. “We have a great relationship with [Naoki] Yoshida-san and we’re working through what it means to bring [to Xbox] a cross-platform MMO that they’ve run for years.”

We want this like yesterday.

This is great news! If Spencer is already talking about it, then I’ll take that to mean that is essentially a done deal.

I think that this is going to be available on both the current gen and next gen Xboxes because Microsoft has already made such an investment in backwards compatibility, that it seems unlikely that FFXIV would only be available on the next gen console. Not only that, I’ve always had the impression that Yoshida and Square Enix had already done some work on it, at least enough to understand the challenges of getting it to work on Xbox.

Of course, I could be utterly wrong about all of this, but it’s fun to dream.

Biggest thing I wonder is would this be for the current gen or their next console?

The Xbox game pass is already really good value as it is and with the list of games added by SE it’s pretty impressive.

If they could also get FFXIV with full cross play it would be great for everyone.

As someone who is seriously considering getting a console instead of repairing my gaming pc this is not making the choice any easier, hehe.

Just making the full jump to console myself. I’m in IT, when I come home I just want it to work lol. ESO on Xbox, FFXIV on PS4 Pro, I’m covered. And of course I play other things, currently Outer Worlds and Metro. I think the lines are going to continue to blur between console and PC. I don’t regret the move. Just got the PS4 Pro and working on mapping the controller, going to give it a try for FFXIV. If nto fallback is k&m.

As long as they don’t put it on switch so we don’t see “ps3 limitations 2.0” I’m cool, more peeps to play with, I’m just curious who’s gonna fold to make it happen? SE allowing Xbox to still require Live to play or Xbox allowing the game without live.

Press X to Doubt

FFXIV, on launch, offered this deal to M$oft on the condition that Xbox Live was not needed to play, along with PlayStation.

PlayStation said sure – Xbone said no.

Hope they get a lot of money from M$oft for this.

Things changed yo’.
Under Phil Spencer Xbox opened up to cross-play. But at that same time Sony locked PlayStation down, don’t you remember the entire fiasco with Fortnite where folk were barred out of the Switch/Xbox versions because Sony refused to allow cross-play with PSN? Or all the games Sony said no to cross-play (Rocket League being the outspoken developer), Sony became the barrier as the roles swapped.

It was mostly embarrassing for Sony when Nintendo. AKA taking the friend list of the Wii U away and degrading back to friend-fecking-codes Nintendo was perfectly cool with cross-play, but Sony wasn’t.

As for cash, they might get a marketing deal, but both parties seemed to want to meet so I doubt much or any money needs to transfer hands.

what does cross play (which both sony and Microsoft are open too now btw) have to do with Microsoft requiring Xbox Live on top of 14’s sub to play?

Sony from the start was open to 14 being on their platform without requiring PS+
Ironically in this situation its been Xbox one’s crossplay regulations and reluctance to drop Live as a requirement that has been holding FFXIV back from being on Xbone.

An excerpt from an interview with Yoshi P from earlier this year discussing exactly this:

“… If we had made an FPS game [had FF14 been one of those games], then we would already have crossplay. One of the regulations is that players with different platforms cannot chat with each other in-game. Then how do you play an MMO? The other regulation is you cannot make a community with plays on a different platform. You can’t form a guild, you can’t enter into a link shell, [and] no free company…”

Clearly things have changed. Now cause Microsoft wants in on that sweet sweet Final Fantasy playerbase (well mmo playerbase at large really) to shore up its MMO offerings to be on par with Sony.
