Torchlight Frontiers fan creates a build calculator as community waits for launch

The tantalizing wait through Torchlight Frontiers’ development and testing continues, but one fan has made the waiting more bearable with a build calculator for the game’s existing three classes. It’s not the prettiest thing, but it is functional and offers a way to figure out your future character’s build in the here and now.

So when is Torchlight Frontiers actually releasing? There’s no date yet, although considering that the MMO is still in alpha testing, we’d assume the formerly projected 2019 release window is probably not going to happen at this point. In fact, back in August Echtra Games CEO Max Schafer said, “2019 was an early estimate. As you probably know, we’re better at making games than estimating dates, but the bottom line is the game will ship when it’s done. Shigeru Miyamoto once said, ‘A late game is only late until it ships. A bad game is bad until the end of time.’ We want to take the time to get it right, but we aren’t quite ready to update or change our release date.”

We recently deep-dived the game’s ongoing alpha in our Choose My Adventure column.

It absolutely won’t be 2019. It isn’t ready yet even for one of those pushed out the door too early releases that never should have been done – it’s not even at that stage yet.

Development on this has gone incredibly slow. I’ve been in the test for over a year now and it’s been almost entirely tweaking of systems and bug fixing since without much addition. And those tweaks aren’t even done and set yet.

Once they finalize those things they can pretty quickly add in new content, but what is there right now people would blast through incredibly fast and be bored at the lack of story and how much it really doesn’t feel that much like Torchlight still.

They have a long way to go still and a lot more to do. You may think you want it, but really you wouldn’t want the game released now. I wouldn’t want the game released anytime soon, they wouldn’t want the game released anytime soon, my cat wouldn’t want the game released anytime soon.

People worrying about it just need to be patient. It really has a long ways to go still. And no 2019 is way out the window.

I’m still waiting to see what the next class will be. None of the available ones interest me.

It’s kind of dumb that they haven’t said what all the classes will be yet.

I still have mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, 2 of the 3 classes at least sound neat (dusk mage more ho-hum), I don’t mind the graphic style, and while ARPGs are hit or miss for me, I did like both Torchlight games. But, PW monetization is always worrisome and only 3 classes is a bit light for launch.

It has potential for sure, so I’m not writing it off, but there are some possible hurdles. I do like it when fans make tools and such for games, will take a look at that calculator!

as I have been in the alpha for little over a year now i can let you in on some insights that might help you :). First off the game will not launch with 3 classes, it will launch with 4 with the 4th not announced yet.
as for the Micro transactions. PW will have no part in what they’re doing in game which is just cosmetics through a fortnite style system. PW only helps publish the game and use its ARC system for patching and downloads. Echtra games is actually handling all the Cash Shop goodies and NONE of it is pay too win.

Perfect World doesn’t set the monetization for them. In fact Perfect World publishes many games that are sold outright, so I really am not sure why their monetization is worrisome to you. They leave it up to the subsidiaries how to do it.

There are multiple games under the PW umbrella that have some of the better monetization in F2P gaming too, where you can actually get everything in the game just by playing without having to spend (sure it takes a while, but you can get it).

Side note – The three classes they have aren’t even actually finished yet. It has a long way to go. Development over the past year has been fairly slow honestly. The game is far from ready, I wouldn’t expect to see it anytime soon.
