I didn't say zorp.

You know how Perfect World and Cryptic have been talking up a new Magic the Gathering MMORPG for like… years? It’s still happening, and at The Game Awards tonight, we finally got a name and some visuals to go along with it. It’s called Magic: Legends, and it looks gorgeous. The studios are calling it a “MMO Action-RPG” at this point; the official website says the game is “coming soon” and is collecting beta signups.

“Tonight, during The Game Awards, Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios officially announced Magic: Legends, a MMO action RPG set on the iconic planes of Magic: The Gathering. Fans will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the acclaimed fictional multiverse of Magic: The Gathering as a powerful, spell-wielding Planeswalker of their own creation when Magic: Legends begins beta testing in 2020.”

[…]

“Among the longtime fans of Magic: The Gathering is the development team at Cryptic Studios, who have been working on the game behind-the-scenes since 2017. Development of this MMO action RPG is an extension of a licensing partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Cryptic Studios following the success of Neverwinter, the critically acclaimed MMO based on the tabletop adventure, Dungeons & Dragons. The team currently developing Magic: Legends is helmed by executive producer, Stephen Ricossa, former executive producer behind the popular MMORPG, Star Trek Online.”

I don’t know much about Cryptic but seeing PWI was enough for me to say nope.

No gameplay so it’s all just cutscene crap that doesn’t tell me anything about the game. That said, it’s Crytpic and they were a one-hit wonder as far as I’m concerned so I doubt they will release anything worth playing.

I wonder why so many games add “Legends” to their name?

In this case I image it’s a kick to all those games that make CCG spinoffs and call them legends. They’re just flipping it, calling their MMO based on a TCG for legends.

I used to have a dark deck as a kid. It will be nice to see a game world based on it. Great lore. I actually thought this was just a really cool trailer for a new card release, I completely blew it off last night lol. I’m glad I have Massively :)

If PWI is Involved you can most certainly expect pay to win and massive amounts of micro transactions to be in this game.

MtG is pay to way win. Why not the MMO too?

Yah i dont doubt it.. Just look at what PWI did to Star Trek Online and Never Winter when they got ahold of the games.. poor cryptic, they try so hard to make a good game then this greedy pos company comes in and micro transactions the hell out of everything

I can’t argue with this.

agreed, i wish they could have a more balanced system in order to make profit. I still prefer straight sub games over ftp/cash shop.

Because P2W sucks?

Magic has a bunch of settings to tap into but I’m wondering what kind of game it’s going to be – “Action/MMO/RPG” sounds very Diablo/Path of Exile-like but if everyone is a Planeswalker that seems to limit the variety. Maybe you have to start by picking a single color of mana (I mean, the colors have to be a thing) and pick abilities from a color-specific tree? Even that seems limiting though if you only ever have 5 colors to choose from. I’m cautiously intrigued about how they will do this.

I may be wrong, but to me ‘MMO action RPG’ in this context implies more TERA than Diablo.

I really doubt the game will resemble the card came. For DND 5e they just had planeswalkers have planeshift 1/day and use standard classes. At best, they might use the color wheel for themes (which i hope they do).

Game looks good. The folks behind it though are a mix bag of reviews. >.<

I mean it looks great but that’s not in-game graphics. Need to see that and at least some word on game mechanics.

No. No fucking way.

The only thing that makes me nervous about this game is the last time I played neverwinter…that game was full on BTW in their cash shop. I remember making a ranger and you could out right buy complete sets if gear. When neverwinter had released I was suuuuper excited for it because I use to spend years playing NWN. But what could of been a permanent place for me in the world of mmos didn’t last very long due to its MTX system. I will try this new magic mmo…but if they go that same route I won’t stay long.

The real killer in Neverwinter is the enchant system. It’s a major part of stat progression but at endgame upgrading your enchantments has a 99%+ chance to fail and waste all the materials unless you use an expensive cash shop consumable that boosts the success rate to 100% or a cheap one that stops you from losing the materials. It’s so “successful” for them that they extended it to gear that upgrades using the same system. It’s not obvious to new players so you don’t see the faults of the system until you’re invested in the game, but it’s absolutely ridiculous.

wow…i didnt know its that bad, i stopped playing NW around level 30 cuz i couldnt justify having to buy backpacks with real cash instead of making em in game. I tolerate it on STO cuz of my lifetime sub stipend.

The gear upgrade system in Star Trek Online is similarly horrific. It’s also the only way to acquire level appropriate gear after level 50, which is where dropped loot and quest rewards cap off.
