Sea of Thieves is having a good week! For a start, Rare announced this afternoon that the pirate MMO-lite has commandeered 10 million players over its lifetime – not too shabby for a title that still requires a box purchase or Xbox sub.
The studio’s also posted a fresh developer update, Legends of the Sea, launching next week on January 15th. Players can expect Umbra (previously a live-acted NPC) added to the game officially, plus exploration and discovery gameplay baked in to reward new commendations and tats, and multiple quality-of-life tweaks, better storage spawning, faster ship-sinking in arena, and so on. Opt-out for adventure crossplay is also on the way, which has Redditors and Twitter nervous since that could affect population.
The studio’s Joe Neate does say that dev updates will be shifting from being weekly, which seems like a good idea given how thin they’ve been, though he does promise more details on the update next week.
Join us in a toast to the 10 million pirates who have ventured onto the Sea of Thieves looking for adventure, glory and a tall tale or two to tell their mates! Cheers to every single one of you, and thank you for joining us on this voyage! 🍻 pic.twitter.com/xXdCKb3Gx7
