LOTRO’s 2020 producer letter: Dwarves, weddings, PvP servers, Rohan housing, and more

Lord of the Rings Online’s tardiest producer’s letter ever has finally arrived, six days into April, to give players a vision of what’s to come for the game in 2020.

While it doesn’t sound as though the Gundabad expansion is happening this year, players do have a lot to anticipate, starting with a spring Dwarvish-themed update, continuing through Aragorn and Arwen’s wedding in the summer, and a “mega” content drop in the fall that’ll feature the ability for all levels to partake in the front lines of a war.

Standing Stone Games also announced two new server types on deck for 2020. The first is a temporary “Challenge League” PvP server that will, for the first time ever, pit player characters against each other to earn glory and accomplish deeds. Later in the fall will come an Eye of Sauron legendary server that’ll beef up characters’ and enemies’ power at random intervals.

Finally, LOTRO is committing to some sort of legendary item revamp this year as well as the debut of Rohan housing. “It is important for us that the players feel that their progress on their legendary items carries forward into the new system, and we are discussing design changes with that in mind,” SSG said.

Elladan vs Elrohir, seems a bit forced, but w/e, they’re trying new things…

Personally I would only play a pvp server if it was freeps vs creeps .Not interested in a gankfest . I don’t know how that would work though because questing if focused on the freep side .

Finally, the war we all wanted. Hobbits vs Humans.

I’m honestly just sad that Rohan housing will be premium.

if they would just remaster the games graphic engine, id come back as a premium player in a heartbeat.

It’s more likely that Amazons’ F2P Middle Earth MMORPG will overshadow this trash to the point it may shut down, and rightfully so. LOTRO has been a mediocre WoW clone with predatory monetization for years and honestly it doesn’t deserve to exist. Even now that it’s completely F2P until April 30, it’s just a piss poor garbage WoW clone.

LOL @ WoW clone , now that is a phrase I have not heard for a long time . Probably because most people when they matured with age realized WoW itself was a “clone” of previous MMO’s like Everquest .

There was a time long ago every first person shooter being called a Doom or Quake clone but no one these days calls say Far Cry a Doom clone . Its just now a genre of gaming .

So edgy. I don’t know what game you played, but that description doesn’t match the LOTRO I’ve been playing since release.

Also, nobody says “WoW Clone” anymore. No one who knows better, anyway.

Wow clone it is not.. Predatory monetization I can get behind because the decision makers for SSG in regards to pricing (DLC’s, quest packs) and putting things in the store that encourages lock boxes are scumbags.

Well, yes, LOTRO is a theme park. Not only that, core game systems are tied to the cash shop to reduce the ungodly grind of said systems, there is fear that the new LI rework will be even more tied to the cash shop, which seems to be the way the winds of this game have been blowing since 2010.
You can play the game casually, and not mess around with the imbuement system/LI grind. Maybe SSG will surprise everyone and make a new LI system that doesn’t prey on people’s wallets.

Sounds as though you’ve never actually played it.

I wasn’t talking to you. That was a response to Cemalt.

They need to do something about lag as well.

They improved graphics few times but don’t expect re-making of the engine. Too expensive unfortunately :(

I stopped playing LOTRO when I realized that other than my two mains, my alts were never going to be able to attain the a legendary level that would allow them to do the content going forward without a great deal of painful, boring grind. Or, I could spend a lot more money on a game that I’ve already spent a lot of money on.

If they actually do change the legendary system to be less obnoxiously burdensome, I may give it another look.

I really hope the Eye Of Sauron server will be really difficult. I try to come back to Lotro but the leveling is so mindnumbing easy I can get past level 30. I would love to see a hardcore server…I have no confidence that they will get this right, but we will see
