WRUP: Lies I have told to myself in the past week and when I realized that they were lies edition

“This week I am going to take the time to really cook this meal in a way I’ve never tried it before.” Lasted until I realized that would probably reduce the amount of time I could spend farming in Diadem.

“This week, I am going to actually pick up my desk and get it nice and clean.” Lasted 25 minutes until I found an old brochure for a game I hadn’t checked up on in a while, sending me into a fugue state that ultimately ended with me owning two new expansion packs for The Sims 4.

“This is going to be the week that I start running every day.” I had not yet checked the weather.

“It’s time for me to finally admit that I can’t sing all that well.” What? Why is this here? This wasn’t a lie I told myself. Who put this here? My singing voice is good. This wasn’t a lie. I never said this. Someone delete this line.

“This week, What Are You Playing isn’t going to just be funny to me.” Technically it’s not funny to me either, so I sort of got it.

Bonus question: If you could perfectly make any single noise from your mouth outside of the usual range of human speech, what would it be? (For example, car honks, or the sounds of jackhammers running, or modem connection sounds.)

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Doing the Pokemon Go Community day, mostly at home but will try to get in some more walking time because, ugh, I can feel the need for it. Then I’ll undo that with some Animal Crossing: New Horizons (my Asheron’s Call themed island is coming along slowly but I’m enjoying it) and a virtual console party with friends. Probably means we’ll at least do some Jackbox games and Super Smash Bros.

For the bonus question, I think it’d be a toss up between a police siren and a dog whistle. I figure the police siren would get people to behave, while the dog whistle would for the additional attention I’d get from my furry friends.

Andy McAdams: Still unexpectedly playing Star Wars: The Old Republic. It’s surprisingly gratifying and the Gunslinger is a lot of fun to play. How long will I last? No idea, but I’m enjoying myself at the moment. I’ll probably also continue to dip into Elite: Dangerous and continue being social in Final Fantasy XIV. Throw some ACNH in there too.

Ben Griggs (@braxwolf): I’ll be continuing to grind up the tech trees in World of Warships. I’ve discovered that ship upgrades actually do help improve your performance (imagine that) so I’ll need to keep earning credits for those. I’ve got a few empty ship slots so I might be tempted to start down another ship line. They’re like alts in The Elder Scrolls Online for me. I can’t stop!

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): I’ve played a bunch of Star Wars Galaxies Legends this week, so I’ll probably take a few days off and mess around in City of Heroes and Guild Wars 2 instead. We got my son his jackal in GW2 a few days ago, and he can’t stop talking about it.

This is one of the hardest bonus questions ever. It’s tempting to pick something trolly like an airhorn, but my brain keeps circling back to the fuzzy reverb of a marimba or the unique layered sound of unison trumpet/trumbone, stuff I actually like. I’m not helpful on this one.

Chris Neal (@wolfyseyes, blog): My standbys are standing by (Final Fantasy XIV and Animal Crossing, for the record) as well as a dip back into some Dauntless and some more scratching my sudden ARPG gaming itch with Torchlight III and Magicka 2. I might need to reroll in Torchums, though; the Sharpshooter is way too easy right now. But then again, there is something nice about laying down the hurt I can…

The answer to the bonus question is easy: I want to perfectly mimic electric guitar notes! Instead of nyer-ne-nana-nee nyow’ing my way through my favorite solos, I could sing right along!

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Eh, mostly just FFXIV and some Final Fantasy VII Remake, I think. Nothing all that far outside the usual, if we’re being honest.

Basically I’d just like to be able to turn my noise-box into a sound board at will, but barring that, I think I’d like the idea of being able to perfectly imitate the sound of a wooden beam snapping in two.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): With new content in both Fallout 76 and Lord of the Rings Online, I have my hands more than full with glorious adventures. I’m also trying to wrap up my Necromancer’s personal storyline in Guild Wars 2 because I’m a masochist or something.

Samon Kashani (@thesamkash): Starborne. The all consuming. It’s taking up all my free time at this point. It’s perfect for filling in every five-minute gap I have. I was also able to get one of those Valorant keys by watching a steamer for far too long, so I’m going to try and play that some more. Also I’ve been putting off Guild Wars 2’s Super Adventure Box, which is truly telling. I really want to play at least a few tribulation runs.

Tyler Edwards: Pretty much same as last week. I’m all in on We Happy Few, and if I have any time leftover I’ll play some more of Diablo II (in Grim Dawn).

Bonus question: Um, is everything okay at home, Eliot?

Pierre, patron: I had a lot of work to do and didn’t have a lot of time for gaming this last week. Consequently, I barely started playing Final Fantasy VII Remake, and my The Last of Us playthrough is still not finished. I should work on those this weekend. I did find some time to play The Elder Scrolls Online, very casually, but I played some. Unfortunately, I don’t know why, but the game doesn’t interest me as much as it used to when I came back to it a few weeks ago. I’m not so sure I will go on playing TESO for very long… We’ll see.

Bonus question: I’m incapable of whistling. So, before anything more complex, I’d really like to learn how to make a proper whistle rather than some more exotic sound. And you MOP readers, what are your MMO (or not so MMO) gaming plans for the weekend? Let us know in the comments and, as usual, stay safe at home if possible.

Every Saturday, join the Massively OP community and staff for What Are You Playing, our roundup of what MMORPGs and other games we’re hoping to play this weekend (with a bonus question or two for our amusement). Tell us what you’re up to! Go off-topic! And don’t forget to have fun!

When I last reported in a month ago, I was idly dipping a toe back into EQ2 as a break from the endless dungeon grind of FFXIV. Well, since then I’ve gone all in, starting a new Fae swashbuckler who’s now in the process of tearing a swath through Steamfont. Taking lessons learned from the past, I’m modulating my levelling by pouring all that double XP into Alternate Advancement points, which I’m sitting on a small mountain of by now, and bringing up my mercenary only when I need to tackle a dungeon. It’s definitely recaptured some measure of nostalgia for me, and finding a text-chatty guild helps! The one good thing about working from home, on a brutally tedious company task, is that I’ve now got those three hours of my daily commute freed up as well. Enjoying it while I can!

I am continuing to endure my ongoing adventures in the existence that is mine which I would call Nightmare Disneyland, but it’s my normal so, it just is. Fighting off roaming bands of ravenous cannibal mutants has become just kind of what I do now, been that way long before COVID so I am well trained and will carry on as per usual, perhaps with more of a Wu Wei approach, which is in line with the kind of guy I really am. Playing Syphon Filter on PS2, not to much gaming other than that. I did read the Game Archeologist article on email games and that sounded very cool so after making this post I am going to check that out and see if there are any I can find that interest me. I did try out a play by mail game waaay back that was advertised in the back of Conan The Barbarian comics that took place in that fantasy world, before I knew what the internet was, apparently it did exist but I was unaware of it, better times tbh, but video games sure have come a long way. Actually there’s a lot of good online, and online games and video games in general have given me a lot of enjoyment at times since my days of playing Tron and Ghouls and Ghosts to nowadays, things have come a long way. It’s the choices we make I think. Thanks, have a great weekend and next week too.

As media has taught all of us, there is absolutely literally no such thing as ‘lies’ anymore. Just… ‘alternative facts’… Facts such as…

… Yeah, even as a bit I cannot commit to this. We literally have people in power suggesting we drink and otherwise ingest dangerous and/or outright lethal substances as a way of ‘fighting’ off illness. It’s at a point where my snark has… busted… itself. We’re at a point where my sarcasm and snarky commentary might end up being truth in of itself… And I don’t like that.

I don’t like this.

At least Eliot is having fun with and making stuff here, and that makes me chuckle.

And while I’m staring into my monitor, realizing that truth is truly stranger than fiction and is leaving me feeling… Hollow…?

Downloading Guild Wars 1 so I can dabble back into the genuinely new stuff! It has been a good while since I’ve played, so I’m looking forward to dipping my toes back into something genuinely great associated with Guild Wars as an IP…

Also be doing more FF7 Remake, as well as staring at the recently announced “Ultimania” guide for it. The book is literally thicker than most Game of Throne novels. Japanese-only unfortunately, but this is tempting me so bad regardless…

I might also be leaning harder into Final Fantasy 14 too. A lot of the content being talked about for 5.3 sounds like I’ll have to catch my ilvl up, like the Unreal fights… And I want to do them, even if it’s Titan. I’m also… dreading… the next stage of the Relic questline too. It’s Eureka 2.0, and I can only pray they don’t make it such a painful mess as the first one to deal with–or at the very least, the alternative option they are including isn’t a bloody pain to deal with.

As for bonus question…? Honestly…? I can do plenty of sounds as is. Call it a love of Voice Acting and the like, and plenty of boredom as a kid who enjoys sound effects. But one I absolutely can’t do, and would love…? Vuvuzela. That sounds fun to be able to do, in a way that would be horrifying. Or a Kazoo. Kazoo is just… that is a sound.

I’ve played the pixels off of Star Trek Online‘s most recent content drop, so I’m giving that game a bit of a rest for a while to avoid burn-out.

I tried going back to The Lord of the Rings Online, but alas — the game’s visuals have aged beyond my personal immersion threshold, so I said goodbye again. :-(

Instead, I’ve been playing a ton of both Neverwinter Online, and the mobile game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes on my PC.

Also tried out Path of Exile, thanks to all the positive commentary by posters mentioning the game here, and I found that I like it way more than I expected I would ….

… BUT I have a real problem connecting (and staying connected) to the game servers. I don’t think it’s a technical issue on my end, though. It seems like the game’s servers are just getting slammed by masses of quarantined players wanting to play.

Still thinking if I should add a new game to my mix, while there are a bunch of sales going on, but I haven’t decided whether I really need new entertainment, or if the quarantine life just has me especially restless …

Bonus Answer: I don’t know about inhuman noises, but I would pay a lot of money to be able to sing well. I even took lessons once upon a time, but my throat got damaged due to an undetected affliction a few years back. I can still talk and all that, but singing the way I wish I could sing is pretty much out.

I’ll leave yas with a panel from one of my favorite webcomics. I have no children, and as a semi-geezer, it seems highly unlikely that I ever will be a parent now, but this guy writes about family life in a way that still makes me laugh.

Take care of yourselves, and each other, please,

Fallout 76 has shifted into my main game for the moment as I continue to ignore the majority of my quests and just have fun running/jumping around with Speed Demon + Marsupial and doing whatever/exploring wherever I feel like. I’ve been blessed by RNG with my Mutations at this point – managed to get Talons, Speed Demon, Marsupial, and Twisted Muscles with only Carnivore/Unstable Isotope as the “whatever” mutations. Just need Adrenal Might start the boy scouts stuff so I can finally get a backpack.

Other than that, probably will be dinking around with Summoner in FFXIV because I’ve decided I didn’t torture myself enough by getting my Monk’s Zodiac relic completed and want a book as well. Maybe doing some Baldesion Arsenal too but maybe not.

Also might plug some time into the FF7 Remake if I can peel myself off of the computer for a few hours.

Not to brag, but I am flush with cash at the moment due to danger pay and stimulus money. I am desperately trying to find things to buy to entertain me (read: video games) and there is just nothing out there right now that interests me. I want a big, brain dead button masher, but it’s like the games industry looked at Saints Row 4 and said “that’s amazing; let’s never make anything like that ever again.” It doesn’t help that Just Cause 3 was a bit lackluster and number 4 was flat out crap that dropped the core game play loop of the series. Le sigh… I long for the days when 15 to 20 hours was a long game, and games were easier and less demanding than they are today. I honestly have no idea WTF people are talking about when they talk about how hard games used to be, because I remember the exact opposite.

Anyhoo, got real determined and managed to get past the one time email barrier(s) into SWTOR. I’m enjoying the double xp for now. I’ll probably only play for a week or so, but that’s fine for now.

Alright back to my underpaying and at high risk job so no one has to go without apple crumble, mint chocolate ice cream and/or Doritos today. Stay safe.

Unfortunately I do not have any danger pay yet but hopefully that changes.

Honestly, I’d trade my “danger pay” for better safety measures, and better anti-hording policies.

The big secret about grocery stores right now is that they’re raking it in. This is happening because way too many people are trying to buy three and four weeks of groceries at a time so they don’t have to step foot in a grocery store again for a month. Except then they’re sitting at home bored with a house full of food, at which point idle hands do the devils work; and they end up back in the grocery store in under two weeks doing another ridiculously huge shop. I’ll also add, that after toilet paper and baking yeast (yeast? WTF?), potato chips are flying off the shelves and almost impossible to keep stocked for very long. If you haven’t lost even a little bit of weight during this lock down, take a good look at your shopping habits, and ask yourself if you’ve got too much food in the house. Seriously folks: one week at a time.

My store, which is a small neighborhood store, is making twice as much on average per day as it was before all this. I’ll add that things have calmed down considerably compared to the first few weeks: back then we were making three or four times our daily average. Labor cost has only increased by about 15% versus what it was before this. My “danger pay” increase was two dollars an hour. While that is not an insignificant bump in income, the fact is that grocery stores could have increased pay by 50% for all employees, and they’d still be making significantly greater profit than they were before the COVID19 measures went into effect.

Okay, I’m going to stop ranting about my workplace and stupid people now. This is supposed to be a site about video games. So I suppose that means I could at least continue to rant about stupid people.

And that is BS as far as I’m concerned: the people who we’re most dependent on would be making out like bandits right now if it were up to me.

This week: Is it over yet?

“No it isn’t. Still ballooning up like William Shatner’s girth for the last couple of decades or so, Uta.”

…and they still want to open things up?

I’m waiting for Shadowlands pre-patch in WoW, until then going to play other games, checking Ragnarok Online 2 because why not, it’s in a list of games i want to try.

Bonus question: whatever noise elephants make, i want to be able to talk with them.

Currently trying out XCOM: Chimera Squad and am enjoying it.

Games I have bounced off of in the last few weeks are: Bard’s Tale 4, Golem Gates, & Total War: Warhammer I.

Put a few hours into Mount & Blade Bannerlord II too, but I will get back to that.

Tried to get back into TESO, but as in previous attempts, I get overwelmed by the number of options and combinations of whatever DLC/Chapter/Plus things I need to purchase to just play what I want. Also it still has no way non-tedious way to trade so I just get paralyzed with my overloaded toons’ assets when I log into them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Bonus question: mobile dailies, finish Wizards event and clear the group main story quest that’s been sitting there since launch (play in group with like 3 others), more War of the Visions story, aim towards Lv 30 in main job FFXIV (try out others?), see about playing Fortnite with other isolating family, explore Titan Quest and what’s in free Stadia, uhuhuhuh maybe Blade x Lord story as I feel behind, maybe SWTOR Taris as I am ‘behind’. That should be at least mostly it.

In other words, mobile stuff as always, FFXIV! and possibly other MMOing, and playing around a bit otherwise.

I’d like to actually make time for a couple of my online courses, personal project, and seeing what work I can get.

edit: wait maybe i misinterpreted? ha
