Apex Legends has already planned as many as 12 seasons, aspires to be ‘more than just a battle royale game’

I blew things up!

An interview with game director Chad Grenier has unveiled some interesting designs for the future of Apex Legends, not the least of which being to expand the game to new platforms, new players, and new ways to play outside of the battle royale sub-genre, though the shape of those plans isn’t immediately obvious.

“I think if you look into the future, we have a lot of conversations of, you know, should we expand beyond battle royale? We have this roster of legends that people love – how else can we use them? I think looking into the future, you’re probably going to see the game becoming more than just a battle royale game. You see we have all these LTMs (limited time modes) and other ways to play. I think that’s a great starting point.”

What is known is that the team at Respawn Entertainment has already laid out plans for content up to Season 12, with the rather nebulous promise of “very high level things” that the devs are trying to do up to that point. Naturally, details were scarce, but it’s part of an apparent forward-looking workflow for the game. “Once we get to next year and we’re shipping Season 8, we’ll be having ideas for Seasons 13 and 14,” Grenier says. “But things really come together… probably within the last three months, that’s when you really put the finishing touches on things, start working on the trailers and animated content – things like that.”
