Omar Gonzalez, a chief architect of World of Warcraft Classic, has departed Blizzard for Dreamhaven

That's bait.

If you’re a fan of WoW Classic, you have Omar Gonzalez to thank for it. You may not have known about that, but it’s true; Gonzalez was basically the man who locked himself away to find a way to integrate classic data with the modern World of Warcraft client, proving that the project was possible in the first place. This means that it’s kind of significant that after 18 years with Blizzard he’s apparently moved on to Secret Door, one of the two studios developing under ex-Blizzard head Mike Morhaime’s company Dreamhaven.

What projects Gonzalez will be working on in his new position remains to be seen, but it seems obvious from the man’s resume that he’s a talented designer and engineer with plenty of experience. We wish him the best of luck in his new occupation and the best of luck to Blizzard in finding a successor.

“departed blizzard for dreamhaven” kind of on the nose isn’t it?

EA: We destroy Worlds! Even ones as massive as WoW.

Yeah, the folks who can are steadily migrating away. And good luck to them.

So the Blizzard OGs are slowly but surely starting to jump ship and transition to Morheim’s new studio. I’m actually intrigued about what comes out of that (other than the already announced tabletop campaign).

FYI, I know Omar. Great guy, great engineer. His loss will be felt at Blizzard.

Congratulations to him, Mike M. is a really smart guy (duh, right?) and I’m sure it’s going to work out for all of them!

Seen this before. The people who MADE Blizzard are leaving the company to re-create under a new company. Cant wait to see what they can do with the corporate shackles off. Also sad that Activision is destroying their IP and not really caring.

I think one only has to look at the output of BioWare as EA influence and turnover mutated the creative process at that company.

I hate to say it, but Blizzard feels more and more like that’s the path it’s going down.

I think it’s charmingly optimistic that you used the present subjunctive there.

I give it two successful releases before activision tries to buy dreamhaven.
