The Daily Grind: What was the last thing you built in an MMO?

MMO builders, this Daily Grind is for you. And I don’t mean people who build MMOs; I mean people who build in MMOs. And with a few prominent exceptions, that’s actually a ton of MMOs – so many online games allow you to build houses or cities or spaceships. At minimum, you can probably at least decorate a house.

For me, it was a new building in SWG Legends. You can’t fashion the architecture of buildings there, but you can decorate them and even change the way interiors are put together if you’re clever enough with the objects on offer. I bought a one-room bunker with windows that I had back on live and have so far put in rugs, firepits, and storage to make it more homey while I figure out what to do with it more permanently.

So set aside character builds and costumes for a sec and focus on construction. What was the last thing you built in an MMO?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Uh…a pile of no inventory space on multiple characters because of a poorly designed system of way too many items and a craft bag locked behind paying?

Playing Expeditions in NMS finally pushed me into building a base that’s more than a single room wooden shack.

In Trove i removed my house, dug underground area and put work stations there, because i thought i want to build something different, the problem is: i have no imagination! so i didn’t build anything.

Is there a way to see what other people build? i want to get some ideas.

The MMOs i play right now have nothing to build … which is sad really.

I rebuilt my self-esteem with the power of FRIENDSHIP! <3

I kinda wish I could do more with that though. :D

I obtained the largest hideout thingie in RIFT and spent a ton of time building a jumping puzzle that would be both challenging and interesting to go through with themed rest/stop areas.

When I got like 75% complete, Trion decided to sell some item in the cash shop that had some “super-jump” ability making all my placements null.

…I uninstalled in disgust and never ended up going back.

Either my dual-S-minerals extraction base in No Man’s Sky Expeditions (if you consider NMS as an MMO) or a renovation of one of my houses in Trove.

Most other MMOs I play don’t have anything I would consider actual building; merely decorating a pre-made house, ship, etc doesn’t count as building in my book.

The most recent things I’ve built in a properly online game where most people are in multiplayer mode would be in Warframe. I make a new Forma sometimes. (An item used for upgrading Warframes, weapons and pets.) It could be an item built daily, but I don’t log in every day, and sometimes forget to claim and restart the crafting cycle. I’m also currently working on building more copies of the new Warframe, Sevagoth. (One to feed to Helminth to unlock his Gloom power to place on other ‘frames, and one more just in case I eventually want to try a different mod setup than on my original.)

In games that *can* be multiplayer (but which I play in single player mode):

I’ve semi recently built a greenhouse and dedicated cooking and farming outpost in Ark: Aberration. The place that’s ended up becoming my main fort wasn’t near a good source of water, so growing crops was a pain. I built a smaller outpost near the great waterfall where the main river plunges into the Biolume, and moved the lowest level roll-rats and all my beetles there. The greenhouse has more crop plots than I’ll ever actually need, there’s a barn for the roll-rats and a very, very fenced in area for the beetles to wander around as they convert poop into fertilizer. And a dedicated kitchen area with an industrial cooking pot drawing water from the river, industrial grill, and space for about fifteen refrigerators with their own generator. To store all the buffing foods and creature taming kibble.

I’d also started a new game in Space Engineers, which would normally mean building a hunk-of-junk jalopy of a ship as a mobile base, then working towards my H-01c Surveyor mining ship and TT-425c cargo ships. (My own personal refits of some of the default designs anyone can buy from NPC trade stations.) I haven’t actually played Space Engineers in a while now though, because the devs did a thing in a patch a couple of months ago that left me very upset. Enough that even when they backtracked and sort of fixed it, my feeling for the game is more towards the “well EFF you too!” end of the scale.

Ok, directly – I have build nothing in all my gaming life (barricades and siege engines in LOTRO epic battles does not count).

Last time I helped building to appear was decades ago, in Istaria. Secretly aiding some plots: i.e. create housing construction items, add them to structure and when 100% materials are added – hurray, structure is there. Helped maybe 2 random players, then my Guild with +2 plots.

I don’t know when you last played but I quit long ago and just checked up on Istaria and found out it’s still alive and kicking. And there’s furniture now!

I just built a bunch of mechanical parts which I turn around and sell to somebody who uses them to make fuel blocks for citadels in EVE Online.
