Sea of Thieves’ Pirate Perks program lets players buy real-world merch for earning in-game achievements

Play-to-pay

Sea of Thieves is apparently taking a page out of Bungie’s playbook with the introduction of the Pirate Perks program, a new merchandise feature that lets players “celebrate [their] accomplishments in style” by opening up the “opportunity” to buy exclusive real-world goodies when they earn in-game achievements.

Joining this program is a simple matter of linking a Rare Store account with a SOT account, after which items will be available to buy through the promotion. The merch that’s available right now primarily features t-shirts – seven of them to be exact – but there’s also a collectible coin that can be pre-ordered for those who reach level 100 in the current season’s battle pass.

As one might expect, this announcement isn’t going over very well, as comments on Twitter, the announcement video, and Reddit are generally unkind to the idea. Regardless, if you really want to give Rare Ltd. more of your money for some reason, this avenue is open to you.
