The Daily Grind: Do you try launch MMORPGs just for the experience?

An hour before the F2P launch of Throne and Liberty last week, I was quietly working and minding my own business when I saw MOP’s Colin and Sam discussing downloading the game and what server to play on and I lost every last bit of my cool. I flew to Steam and started the preload. Did I particularly want to play? Not really, no, since I have like 10 MMORPGs on my hard drive that I already love and don’t get to spend enough time on, including the core one I’m playing right now, which is also an NCsoft game anyhow. And I can’t say it was peer pressure either because they weren’t even talking to me.

No, I just suddenly had that specific type of FOMO that only MMORPG players know. Rationally, we know that the early stage of an MMO is never its best look, but damn if we don’t want to be there for the launch thrills anyway, just to say we did it, just to soak up the experience of being there from the start and surviving the chaos. I’ve been playing MMORPGs for 27 years now and I still get this dumb urge.

Do you play new MMOs you don’t particularly want to play just to feel that same launch thrill?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
