City of Heroes’ Halloween 2024 is fun – but the community-run Witch’s House event steals the show

While technically the City of Heroes Homecoming Halloween event for 2024 went live earlier this month, it was barely a footnote compared to the really big news at the time: the impending turn-on for the game’s name reclamation scenario. But that’s no reason to totally skip past the Halloween stuff for which the long-running MMO was and is so famous, so let’s take a peek, shall we?

For starters, the whole of Atlas Park has been transformed for the season, so even if you have no interest at all in the events, at least you can enjoy the ambiance. But there are indeed plenty of events, costumes, and badges to collect, though none new. To wit:

  • There’s trick-or-treating at the mission doors in every zone, with high-end bosses spawning occasionally for mid-level-and-up toons;
  • Dr Kane’s House of Horrors is back again as a four-person holiday trial (I did this with my kids a while back for the nostalgia hit, and they loved it);
  • Giant monster world bosses are randomly spawning throughout standard zones;
  • Some zones are being attacked by the zombie apocalypse and deadly apocalypse spawns;
  • And in the back half of October, the devs will cover most zones in the world in eternal night, perfect for grinding out badges.

Last but certainly not least, we have to point City of Heroes players to the unofficial event of the season: The Witch’s House. It’s a lot more than a house; it’s a whole supergroup base decorated absolutely to the hilt by none other than housing/base aficionada and community YouTuber Dacy, complete with a fleet of actors and huge giveaways.

How do we know it’s worth rolling up a toon on Everlasting to go see it? Because we toured it when Dacy opened it up last February right after the Homecoming team announced its licensing deal with NCsoft, and it was spectacular. And if you are a new player to the game, it’s a great way to score millions of inf in prizes just for showing up and making it to the end of the maze. Multiple times, if you want!

The base will be open limited hours (see the flyer below) on October 18th-20th, October 25th-27th, and then again on Halloween itself, but the best times to see it will be during the overlap of the “live haunt” hours when the actors are on duty and the “trick or treat giveaway” hours when the organizers are handing out free stuff. So that’d be 2 p.m. to midnight EST on October 26th and 7 p.m. to midnight EST on October 27th and 31st.

To access the base (only when it’s open!), log into a character on Homecoming’s Everlasting server, head to a base portal (all the starter areas have them), click on the portal, and then in the password box, type in: BOO-17189. You can also just stand by the base portal and type this into chat: /enterbasefrompasscode BOO-17189.

See you there!
