The Daily Grind: Is the MOBA genre in a period of stagnation?

With SMITE 2 trying to muscle (back) into the MOBA space, it made me really think about that genre’s state in 2025. Once the blazing hotness of the online gaming world (to the point that Joystiq made Old Massively cover them!), MOBAs failed to diversify much due to a couple prominent titles keeping all competitors at bay.

I wouldn’t argue that MOBAs are fading away or anything. League of Legends is still a powerhouse, and the last time I checked, DOTA2 was the third-most played game on Steam. But is the genre stagnating? Is it hurting for new blood and fresh ideas as the current champs remain unmoved at the top of the hill? Or am I missing an upward trend of growth and promise for MOBAs? What do you think?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
