The Daily Grind: If you lost your main MMO characters, would you still play?

As the Lord of the Rings Online transfers were going on over the last few weeks, I had a couple of brief moments when I wondered whether my characters might be lost, especially the first couple of days when it wasn’t clear whether the transfers were working properly and what might happen if a character moved but wasn’t copied over – or what would happen if you tried to transfer twice. Fortunately, those moments were short and unfounded, as in the end, my toons were just fine.

But what if they hadn’t been? I actually contemplated whether I’d start over. For most MMORPGs, I probably wouldn’t. In LOTRO, though, I might. I’ve done it before, after all, and the point of that MMO is to play it, not to accrue wealth. So maybe. I’m attached to my characters there, but I’m much more attached to how I feel when I play. That’s not always true in other games.

How about you? If you lost your main MMO characters, would you still play? Does the MMO itself matter in your calculations?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
