PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has an extreme cheating problem, and it’s not going away. Anti-cheat tool BattlEye announced today that it helped Bluehole ban over a million cheat accounts from the game in January alone. “Unfortunately, things continue to escalate,” the anti-cheat company tweeted.
That brings us to tonight’s patch, which as we’ve previously reported bars the Reshade applications from use by players, whether you were using it for a visual advantage or just for eyecandy. You won’t be able to boot up the game if you’ve got it installed. NVidia’s ShadowPlay, multiple vidcap tools, and apparently Steam family sharing are also subject to at least temporary blocks while the studio works out the kinks.
Bluehole told Steam players this weekend that it’s still working to block cheaters and in fact has a “dedicated team” on the problem.
“We have established a dedicated team to focus on combating cheat programs and since our launch on early access we have been committed to detecting and preventing such programs. As part of that effort, we have developed a new anti-cheat solution internally. We will be introducing an early version of the solution on our live servers next week (this is the solution that is currently being tested on our test servers). This solution will complement the systems that have been developed and implemented already. Its main focus for now is blocking unauthorized programs but it will be further developed to broaden the scope of its abilities.”
Down in the comments and on Reddit, English-speaking players continue to demand that Bluehole region-lock Chinese players from western servers, as they claim it’s Chinese players on VPNs causing the majority of the issues. Ping-locks were reportedly in testing last month.
