If it’s seemed to you like Overwatch just hasn’t gotten as many fun seasonal events or unusual updates for a while, that’s because it’s true. According to Jeff Kaplan, the reason for that is pretty predictable to anyone who either watched this year’s BlizzCon or paid attention to the news surrounding the title subsequently, because yes, all of the effort that could have gone into new seasonal modes or whatever has been redirected entirely into Overwatch 2.
Overwatch 2 was 100 percent the reason […] and that was the reason that we were so excited to announce Overwatch 2. We now feel like we can have that open dialogue with the community of, ‘This is what we’re doing, this is why we’re doing these things.’
Kaplan was quick to emphasize once again that new heroes and maps will be arriving for both games when the sequel launches, and moving forward from that, there was the implication that live events will be shared between both games. He also stresses that the original game is not being abandoned and that there are new things in the pipeline (it’s worth noting that features like role queue in Overwatch were added over the past year, after all). That having been said, since there’s still no hint of a release date on Overwatch 2, players might well expect the content drought to continue for a while longer, seeing as Kaplan has also stated the game will not be finished before BlizzCon 2020.
