The Daily Grind: Do MMO resources regenerate too quickly these days?

You may have to bear with me on this one, but lately I’ve started to suspect that the pendulum of MMO development has swung too far when it comes to how quickly character resources — health, mana, focus, etc. — tends to regenerate.

Back in ye olden dayz, pen-and-paper RPGs wouldn’t feature resource regeneration at all until and unless you found some way to rest or heal. So early MMOs, such as EverQuest,  kept the regeneration rate was painfully slow as a slight concession to that design. But nowadays, health and mana and whatnot zooms from empty to full between fights in practically no time at all.

I’m wondering if this is too fast, to be honest. I think there’s something to be said about RPGs where you have to be concerned about ongoing health and resource depletion as a quest or dungeon goes on instead of only within a singular fight.

So what do you think? Do MMO character resources replenish too quickly these days — or at just the right pace?
