There’s no doubt that the MOBA genre is a behemoth in the industry right now, with titles like League of Legends and DOTA 2 raking in millions of players and Ebenezer Scrooge-amounts of revenue. However, one author says that other studios chasing these numbers with their own MOBA offerings are heading for a trap of dire proportions.
Over at Gamasutra, V Tedeev draws parallels to the current MOBA trend with that of MMOs trying to ape World of Warcraft after 2004: “At this stage, jumping on the MOBA trend may seem like a logical thing to do for some developers and investors. The majority may end losing their money and it’ll be too late to change anything by that point.”
He doesn’t say that all other MOBAs, current and upcoming, are doomed, just those that are trying to cling too close to what’s been done instead of presenting “a desirable product package” for their playerbases.
