The Daily Grind: Are anime stylings a dealmaker or deal-breaker in MMOs for you?

Despite growing up with a healthy dose of Voltron and Robotech in my viewing habits, I’ve never been that fascinated with the anime subculture in television, movies, games, or what have you. Some of it is exciting, some is pretentious nonsense, and some is an endless well of tropes.

Of course, anime does leech into the world of MMORPGs, especially considering that many come from Asian countries. I found that the style was a detriment to my enjoyment of Final Fantasy XIV, for example, but I’ve never shied away from a game because it is slathered in impossibly big-eyed girls and swords large enough to cleave Cleveland in twain.

With anime-infused titles like Blue Protocol on the horizon, I’m curious how much this style hurts or helps an MMO. If a game offers anime looks, tropes, and over-the-top action combat, does it attract or repel you?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
