Shroud of the Avatar marks 10 years with portals to the chicken room and previews a ‘sneak scene’

It just ain’t a party unless you step into a dungeon crawl where you get to slaughter legions of chickens! Or that’s apparently the kind of party that Shroud of the Avatar is holding as part of Release 121, which has opened portals all around the game world that transports players to the latest version of the chicken room that was part of the game’s 2013 initial release.

The 10th anniversary for the incomplete MMORPG was the occasion of an earlier livestream that looked back at some of the development work that went into the game in its inception, toured the newly updated chicken room, and brought on Richard Garriott, who spent part of his airtime talking about his honorary induction into Portugal’s Order of Saint Michael of the Wing because his Explorer’s Club holds an annual summit in the country; he otherwise didn’t add much to the conversation, which at this point is par for the course.

The rest of the items added in R121 include decorative pumpkin pie and a host of fixes for typos, zones, and player-owned towns. The update notes also opened with a sneak peek at a “sneak scene” that appears to be designed around stealth gameplay instead of outright combat and a neutral ground for spies and assassins.

Longtime MOP readers will know that Shroud of the Avatar is a controversial game in the MMO space. Kickstarted in 2013, the project has been criticized for cutting promised features, crowdfunding excessively, delaying Kickstarter rewards, obfuscating its corporate leadership and office status, and neglecting SEC filings legally required by the game’s equity crowdfunding. In 2019, Richard Garriott company Portalarium sold SOTA to its lead dev and all but exited the game. Press inquires were met with stonewalling and insults, and equity crowdfund investors were abandoned without notice or any semblance of accountability; moreover, the groups are now building a blockchain MMO. SOTA itself does still have a tiny playerbase and is technically still receiving minimal development.
