The Daily Grind: Is there an MMORPG you think shouldn’t be classified as an MMORPG?

We have the MMORPG subreddit to thank for this morning’s Daily Grind: At the beginning of January, some bright spark over there posted a thread insisting that EVE Online, a long-running sci-fi MMORPG, is not in fact an MMORPG.

Now, I didn’t click on the thread; insert the “I’m not falling for that hot take/that’s clearly someone with a fetish for getting yelled at” meme by way of explanation. But I do want to point to it to advance the idea that a lot of people hold opinions like this about some MMO or another. I’m not talking about merely multiplayer games that sometimes get bundled into the MMO bin; I mean games that most people would say is an MMORPG – but not you. In fact, I’m willing to bet a lot of you secretly think a game most people contend is an MMO is not, in fact, an MMO. And I wanna hear your unpopular takes!

Is there an MMORPG you don’t think should be classified as an MMORPG? And why?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
