The Survivalist: Seven survival games I want to love, but can’t… yet

Well that didn’t take long! There are a plethora of survival sandboxes out there for fans to play (as you can see from our multiple guides!), enough that there might be some worry that the market for this genre is getting pretty saturated. Perhaps there is room still, but anyone entering that crowded market needs to have a good hook and be able to deliver a worthwhile experience in order to attract and keep players. Sadly, this isn’t always (often?) the case. Even when you want games to not just survive but thrive, there are a host of factors that work against that.

I have found that I enjoy the survival sandbox genre, and I play a number of the games. A couple get the lion’s share of my attention and game time while others are visited occasionally. Some of these titles have a chance to move into a favored position in my heart and my gaming line up. Others, however, have lost their chance completely. Here are seven survival sandboxes that I want to love, but don’t — at least not yet.

Massively Overthinking: Epic Tavern-style player-generated content in MMORPGs

Ever played Epic Tavern? Massively OP reader Uli though it would make an interesting point of comparison for MMO content. “Epic Tavern is a single player game where you run a fantasy tavern frequented by heroes for a drink, food, bed for the night, and you can try to persuade those NPC heroes to go on a quest for you, sharing the spoils,” he explains.

“A comment I read suggested that would be great for MMO taverns: player running a tavern being able to give quests in the game to players frequenting the tavern. I know there are options for player run quests, but this would be different: pre-existing or otherwise player-made and engine-supported quests that are bestowed on player to match their group or skill level. And of course it would mean that visiting a tavern and meeting other players would finally have a point beyond mere chatting/RP. Ensuring people spent time in taverns to interact with would really help the socializing/third-space-in-virtual-rooms issue. But could it work in a MMO? Would that be abused for loot/rewards, biased quest assignment/withholding based on favors? Or what other problems could that cause?”

A lot of our writers and readers have experience with player-generated content, so I thought it would be fun to build on the ideas of Epic Tavern for Uli in this week’s Overthinking. Which MMOs have (or desperately need) great PGC, and when have you seen it go wrong? Could a formal, mechanical system for quest-giving like Epic Tavern’s work in an MMO, or is it something best left to the roleplayers?

The Stream Team: Xsyon survives six years

Long before survival games became all the rage, there was Xsyon. In fact, it may very well be what started Massively OP’s MJ on her survival path. She played the game in the early years as it was developing, but she hasn’t been back in a while. It’s definitely time to jump in and check things out again. Maybe this time she won’t die to crazy chickens or psychotic squirrels! It’s not like the Ides of March is all about death. Oh. Tune in live at 5:00 p.m. to celebrate six years of survival in…

Xsyon kicks off a season full of events, including a mutant rodeo

Just because the world’s been ruined doesn’t mean that Xsyon players can’t have a good time, eh?

A new season of fun events starts this weekend in the post-apocalyptic title. The first event will be a cart race, which will be followed up by such entertaining fare such as a mutant rodeo, an Easter bunny hunt, a stand-up comedy night, bear feeding (whatever that is), a Hunger Games competition, and some good old-fashion fishing. Probably with dynamite or low-yield nuclears.

The event season is being hosted by both the developers and the game’s community. The devs are handing out event tokens to all participants and winners to be able to spend on prizes later on in the season.

Xsyon drops subscription, becomes pure buy-to-play

If the subscription fee ever kept you away from the post-apocalyptic sandbox Xsyon, we’re happy to share with you that this is no longer a barrier to play. Yesterday the lead developer announced that he was dropping the subscription in favor of making the early access title straight-up buy-to-play.

Reasons cited for the decision include changes in the industry, resistance to a sub-based early access title, and the fact that half of the players weren’t subscribing anyway. Xsyon: Prelude currently costs $30 on Steam.

The developer maintained his faith in subscriptions while being pragmatic about the move: “Although I personally still favor the subscription model, it’s clearly turning away too many players at the moment. Without the subscription, new players will be more inclined to join and old players are welcome to return!”
