Star Trek Online launches Season 11.5 today

Are you tired of Star Trek Online‘s clunky old skill system? Are you eager to start showing your strategic side in space battles? Do you have a deep investment in the Na’kuhl from their brief appearances on television? All three of these wants are being addressed in the game’s newest patch, Season 11.5, which deploys on the game’s live servers today. The skill system revamp is in, the Strategist specialization is in place, and the Na’kuhl will challenge players in a sequence of new Red Alert events.

Players can also take advantage of the new visual slots for ships to customize a ship’s look without concern for performance, or they can take part in the new Admiralty campaign centered around the Romulan Republic. Check out some screenshots and the trailer for the half-season patch just below, and enjoy everything the update has to offer today.

It’s sadly ironic that we’re getting almost exactly the same bait-and-switch that we did with ENTERPRISE:

“Remember how we said we were going back to the roots of the franchise, back to exploration and strange new worlds and all that?  Yeah, well… here, have two more seasons of war.  And time travel.”

(I actually enjoyed how the first few feature episodes tied things together from the different series and made them work… sort of.  But this is not what I wanted the whole season to be about, especially since as things go on, the weak points in any plot involving time travel become more and more impossible to ignore.)

Greaterdivinity melissaheather Maybe with the success of Star Citizen will inspire developers, but I think it will be some years to come. It would be great to go and explore with friends :)

melissaheather Disney isn’t really backing star wars games. They sold the exclusive 10 year license to EA in 2013. They retained the rights to make games for mobile and tablets but everything else is all EA.

Hopefully viscerals rumored Han Solo, open world RPG is a better offering and not just a reskinned Uncharted, like DICE’s battle field was. :P

melissaheather That is the thing about graphics, they evolve faster than games can be developed. Although I think what is on the table now is what we are going to get for a good while. There will still be some MMO development but nothing like there has been. I don’t think it is a bad thing though. A game like STO has come a long ways. I never progressed far in the game but enough to know that what they have in it now is way more polished and interesting than what it was 5 years ago(or whenever it launched). How many people skip past a game like STO just because of having their time and attention split between whatever big new shinies there are? For me I look forward to and hope these games are around for a long time and not just one day lost forever like we have seen with some games already.

TommyTim4 melissaheather Greaterdivinity I really wish someone other than Cryptic had the IP license from day one. Imagine what this could have been under a well funded studio? The IP has all the potential in the world. Cryptic has done what they could with the resources they have, but i’m thinking this really could have been huge under the right studio.

Here’s to hoping that the IP can move on in the future, but unfortunately the appetite for big budget mmo development has dried up.

The link embedded in “Source: Cryptic Studios press release” just goes to a list of Massively OP articles with the “Cryptic Studios” tag.

I mean, yes, doing my own search for that press release a second from now is going to be quick and easy, but why bother embedding that link?  Why on Earth does this site’s editors always do that, when tags are just listed at the bottom of every article anyways?  If you’re going to embed links in the body of an article, make it a link to whatever outside source you’re referencing.  That’s how embedded links are done literally everywhere else in the English speaking world.

schlag sweetleaf Greaterdivinity  did they really add Nazis to the game?  if so, good for them.   It’s not Star Trek unless Nazis show up at some point.

melissaheather Greaterdivinity  “pirates of the burning sea in space”  That is exactly what STO feels like.  It seems that if Cryptic stripped out all of the Trek references and gave the game in its current state a Space Pirate” theme, it would be a much better game.

ThatLanteshGuy Just like to add: Any respecs you might have already accumulated prior to S11.5 under the old skill system, is STILL VALID. If you hit the Respec button, it will show the # of tokens you have available (plus the free respec given today).

Pashgan melissaheather well, every half a year there’s a new Star Trek mobile game. They are not too deep but at least you can connect with the IP. TBH I wish STO had a mobile or web app component.

I’d play Flappy Klingons.

Greaterdivinity melissaheather I would love this too. And make use of going on your ship. You can walk around on your ship but you have nothing to do on them. Most Star Treks show took place on the ship.

melissaheather Considering current state of MMO market and gaming industry I’d bet on mobile/tablet reboot for the franchises. Angry Hobbits, Candy Jedi, Flappy Klingons, etc.

melissaheather I mean, there needs to be a mix of both. Even with crews dramatically scaled down it would be tough to constantly have large groups of folks crewing ships in all the necessary functions, especially if you wanted to avoid almost exclusively running pugs.
But yeah, having “crews” replace guilds for stuff like large group exploration missions etc. would be rad as hell. A mixed crew of engineers, science officers, security etc. all working on various aspects of the mission…SO MANY TOTALLY AWESOME POSSIBILITIES I NEED TO STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS -_-

Greaterdivinity I feel it’s essential that you be able to crew and travel together on one ship also.  not just “pirates of the burning sea” in space…

melissaheather Well, they already made that awful action game that bombed super hard based off the new movies, and a handful of underwhelming mobile games : /
And there’s a new Star Trek show in the works IIRC, so there’s that.
But I’d bloody love to see a Star Trek MMO with modern visuals made that focused less on combat and more on the exploration/diplomacy/science/etc. aspects. That would be absolutely radical.

Going to repeat a quick warning in case others weren’t aware:

When you log in to check out the skill system all of your skills will be reset. After that, Cryptic is giving you one free respec. So you get two free chances to redo your skills. If you mess them up again, you have to either deal with it or shell out cash for a respec. Paid respecs did NOT go away in this revamp. Be careful with your skills!

So I think the truth is that the 3 main western fiction IPs have games that are very mature and fully featured now, but graphically long-in-the-tooth.
I think Disney backing and the money will ensure us a steady stream of Star Wars games, you have to wonder if we’ll see another Lord of the Rings game for a generation.  It may take realizing The Silmarillion to bring back a new A-class Middle Earth MMO.
And for Star Trek?  the new reboot movies are already made.  TV series have come and gone.  The game is mature, and the hard core fans like it well enough.  The reboot movies aren’t sufficient to spawn a new MMO with 2016 graphics and sensibilities…

Will it be a generation before we get another Star Trek MMO of its magnitude?  Or have Star Trek and Tolkien run their course for a long while?

I’m bad with names so I had to google that race…they were the time traveling alien space Nazi’s. Man, those episodes were so cringy and awesome. Those super stereotypical Italian mob guys were the freaking best.
Also, time traveling alien space Nazi’s…yeah…-_______-
